Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

My ps2 is getting a disc read error. It is the console, not the disc. How do I fix this? I've heard that you can clean the laser reader with alcohol wipes. Is this advisable, and if so, how should I do it? Thank you.

If it's the newer, slimmer PS2.
To clean the laser lens, do the following:
Dip a Q-tip in rubbing alcohol (not dripping) gently place the q-tip on to the lens and gently twirl the q-tip.
Use the other end of the q-tip to gently dry the lens.

I got a game and I played it for years and then one day my playstation 2 say please insert a playstion or playstion 2 formating disc. Why is it doing that?

PS2 will play any audio cd and any ps2 blue game disc. but it will not entertain a silver game disc or dvd. just keep getting Disc read error.

sounds like your laser is failing. You can find tutorials on how to adjust, clean or replace your laser. Do a google search for " ps2

disc read error " it will give you a choice of plenty of tutorials to follow. Good luck

What you need to do is take you ps2 apart and clean it out and clean the laser lens that reads the cd's...you should be able to google ps2 disc read errors and get videos to help you through it.

You got a problem with the lasers data getting back to the Motherboard.
One of these could be your problem

Laser lens is melted. Look at the lens with a magnifying glass to see if it or its supporting frame is melted. REplace the laser in this case.
The ribbon Cable going from the Laser to the motherboard is damaged or loose.
Your laser is burned out. Press the two interlock to override the door being open, to see if the laser even lights up. 2 switches, one at rear left corner, one behind the On/reset switch.
Your Laser is dirty and needs cleaning look at it with a magnifying Glass to make sure you got it clean. Use Q-tip and window glass cleaner, not alcohol.

Hi Cozza,

Open the console up, and remove the cover over the Cd drive. Clean the lens of the Laser with a Q-tip lightly dampened with Rubbing alcohol. Use the dry tip of the Q-tip to dry the lens, look to see if you left any lint, and make sure the lens of clean.

Disc error

the best to do is the basics open your ps2 and inside open the disc box ( you can simply identify it it is the place where the disc is played) get a cotton buds and wipe gently and smoothly the lens. If
still it won't work go to your nearest repair man for further advice.
