What numbers is it showing? Is the number flashing? If the unit is showing a flashing number, then the inbox is full. Delete some messages. If you see a countdown, it may be resetting itself.
Try unplugging the AC adapter from the answering machine and the wall outlet and then reconnecting it to the power outlet and the machine. This resets the unit.
Next check if the greeting is present. (Press and release Greeting A or Greeting B.) To rerecord a greeting, press and hold the appropriate greeting button. After the tone, speak the greeting then release the button when done. Review your greeting. If the greeting is not stored, the memory on the unit may have failed. Your best option is to replace the unit. (It came with a 1 year warranty and Thomson products haven't used the GE name in over a year.)

(who had a phone with integrated answering machine that had the answering system fail last month. It kept blinking and a reset didn't help. It couldn't maintain the greeting. So replacing it was simpler.)
Time to replace, cost of repair isnt worth it, sometimes theres a reset button on back, try unplugging etc.
