Just got my brand new 490. This is my first digital camera. I am a newbie so be kind. I want to get a new SM card either a 32MB or 64MB. Are all brands pretty much the same ? Are there any brands that I should steer clear of? Do certain brands work better with the Olympus 490? I also just picked up a set of NiMH rechargeables and a charger. Any advice or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: SM card
Have had my 490Z for several months now and like it very much. I use the 32m cards and fine them just right. They take about as many of the low compression jpegs as a standard roll of 35mm film and that works fine for me. Don't think brand makes much difference but you'll want oly brand if you're going to do panoramics with the camedia software. Suggest you get extra sets of batteriess as all digicams suck up the power especially if you use the LCD a lot.
If you want to expand and get some filters, tele and wide angle lenses look for the Raynox kit with one of each and the 37mm adapter. When you have the adapter you can fit many accessory lenses. ( some are really to bulky but some Kenko work pretty well. ) If you're real fussy you find they are not high enough quality to print out 8x10's but i've done some 5x7's that look very nice and the smaller photo print sizes look darn good to me.

The manual says, "SD Memory Cards having the following storage capacity can be used on your camera (Toshiba PDR-3330): 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, and 256MB"
wahoo!just been rummaging the internet and i have found that these cameras will only take up to a 1gb memory card!so just get a smaller size card The camera has 16 MB of internal memory. Memory capacity can be expanded with 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB up to a maximum of 1 GB SD or MMC cards.
The D-400/450/460 and 490 Zoom can use a 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 MB SmartMedia card. In addition, the D-450/460/490 Zoom can also use 64mb SmartMedia cards.

The answer depends on your personal needs and your budget. Memory cards are available in many sizes 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB and 512MB. The larger the card size, the more storage space and the greater the cost. One recommendation is to select a card that allows you to take images without having to worry about changing cards or downloading images very often (one of the advantages of digital photography). Among the most popular are those in 64MB, 128MB or 256MB sizes. You may want to purchase a second card to use as a back-up or replacement card that can be used if you run out of space on the first card or to use when the first card is unavailable (you may be downloading or printing images from the first card.)
