Replacing evap motor on GE side-by-side: need to know how to remove pressure washer that holds fan in place without breaking washer. thanks,

Assuming you have the motor out of the fan housings, check to see if you can move the fan around clockwise/counter-clockwise. If the fan is not moveable, the fan has probably melted to the motor housing. Replacing the motor is recommended as the plastic motor housing under the fan is probably damaged/melted. It could still be fixed but there is a possibility of damaging the housing. If after removing the fan following the directions below be sure to remove/trim any melted plastic away from housing before replacing fan. Not trimming the plastic could result in your new fan melting again to the housing when the machine is turned on. If you have an older model pay careful attention to the carbon brush area, if there are plastic posts holding the carbon brush springs, these are easy to break.

If the fan is movable, remove the nut and washers from fan. Use two large flat head screwdrivers and place them opposite of each other under the bottom lip of the fan between the fan and motor housing. (it might be a little easier if you have an extra pair of hands to hold the motor). With the flat heads in place, push the handles of the flatheads toward the side of the motor where the belt shaft is. If the fan does not pop off rotate the position of the screwdrivers and try again. Pay close attention that the fan washer is installed before replacing your new fan. after installing the new fan, rotate it several times making sure it isn't rubbing anywhere.

I don't believe you can reach the evaporator fan without removal of the ice maker. Unplug the refrigerator while working on ice maker and fan motor. It is easy to remove the rear panel. Questions?...Sea Breeze

Replace the fan, Remove the evaporator cover in the back of freezer, and probably another cover for the fan. Unplug your refer first. Usually their are two screws holding the fan bracket to the wall or mount. disconnect the wires, and replace. Their is a newer model evap fan motor that does not have wiring terminals to disconnect, it is hard wired together and you have to practically remove everything in the freezer compartment to get at it. You have to cut wiring and splice the new fan motor in. Fairly tough job. Usually an evaporator fan motor bearing fails from the refer being moved or in storage for a few days at least with the doors closed and the unit unplugged. This allows all that moisture that was in the freezer to get into the metal parts of the fan motor and cause this problem. To prevent this always block the doors open if your refer is going to be off for a few days. This will allow the unit to dry out without damage. Sometimes it was just a bad motor from the factory. Hello, from the limited information I have this sounds like it's going to be a broken coupling. Kenmore's, Whirlpool's and Ropers are direct drive machines this means they don't have a fan belt. Instead the transmission is connected directly to the motor via a coupling. This is what a coupling looks like: To confirm this pull the machine forward enough that you can lean it back and it will stand back under it's own weight. Wedge something underneath the chassis so it does not fall on you while your accessing the bottom. Go under the Machine and locate the motor, You will see the pump connected to the motor connected to the transmission. 1. Unplug the wire harness from the motor then. 2. Use a screw driver remove the 2 clips holding the pump in place and remove or push the pump out of the way. 3. You will need to remove the 2 screws from the brackets holding the Motor in place with a nut driver. 4. With a screwdriver remove the 2 clips holding the motor in place (be careful to support the motor as the clips comes off) 5. remove the motor and drop it onto the floor. Now you will see the coupling..one side on the motor the other side on the transmission the rubber connector in between. Replace the coupling if broken or worn and reassemble the washer in reverse order. Now you should be all set. Be aware you may smell rubber on the first couple loads this is normal after replacing a coupling. Good Luck!! if you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to comment again. I fixed the problem with my GE microwave turntable motor without having to replace it.
I removed the motor from the microwave and placed it in a small vise. Using a very small flat head screwdriver I was able to pry up the four tabs holding the casing together. You may need a slightly larger screwdriver after that to bend them back out of the way so you can remove the motor cover plate.
Carefully take out all the plastic gears and note their position for re-assembly. You will find that the primary gear, at the bottom of the rest of the gears is attached to the motor magnet. It has a shaft that acts as a bushing passing through the center motor magnet. On the underside it is attached to a plastic washer. This is where it breaks. The motor magnet spins free of the gear/bushing/washer assembly. I used JB Weld epoxy to glue this assembly back together and it works like brand new. Note: On mine there were four indentations on each side of the motor magnet which corresponded to little ‘bumps’ on the underside of the gear on top and washer on the bottom.
Place all the plastic gears back into the motor in the correct order, slide on the motor cover plate and use a small cold chisel with a round end and tap hammer to bend the tabs back into place.

Remove the freezer panel to access the fan motor. Look for any obstruction around the fan or blade. Ice, misplaced wire etc.
Check the fan blade. Sometimes they slip down the shaft too far.
If you find none of these issues, replace the fan motor.

ok corvett your there you just jumped one step..put the motor back and put the 2 motor clips back on,,,ok,,,,now you need to hold the belt side with a tool a grip pliers,,a wrectet head with handle turn which ever tool handle so it will hit the side of the cabnit the right side looking from front,,now wedge that tool..be careful go behind ,,put on worh gloves a must the side of blower wheel housing are sharp..caution got your gloves on,,now turn it to the left not the right,,counter clock wise..onthejob
