Question about Digidesign Mbox External Sound System

2 Answers

I have an mbox 1, sn RK1262600M, running pro tools 7.3 on a macbook running os 10.4.1, when I open protools, it seems as if the I/O recognizes the mbox, but the mbox peak lights stay on, and won't recognize any imputs in either source 1 or 2, on either mic, line or inst. Same issue when I use the mbox in other audio software like ableton live, for example.

With my system, 512 is the lowest buffer size option in Core Audio.
When I attach the Mbox 1 into pro tools 7.3, the only time I get an audio reading from either source input is when I switch to Line or Inst, and there is a quick sound peak reading, and then nothing again.
I trashed all the preference files you suggested.
    Still not working properly.

I'm running mac OSX 10.4.11 and Pro Tools 7.3 with an Orignal Mbox. That setup used to work, with other programs like Ableton Live as well. Now, the Mbox seems to 'power up' and is recognized in the I/O settings on Pro Tools, but I can't get it to read any audio on any enabled tracks. All peripheral cables etc. work. I have tried to change my Core Audio setting to 256, as per recommended, however, 512 is the lowest option available. I've thrown out the recommended preference files - I could find 3 out of 4 suggested. I've restarted, with no other devices connected to no avail.
At this point, I'm wondering if its a hardware problem with the Mbox?
Any further advice is welcome, thanks!

Hi there,
If you've already tried 2 different softwares and the same result came out then it could mean that there is a problem with the hardware. Have you tried using the mbox on another computer with the same software?
You can try doing that for test purposes and if it still doesn't work you would want to consider:
1. Opening the Mbox check if the ports inside are soldered properly and if no loose connections are present
2. Get a replacement mbox.
Hope this helps!

Hello,
It is a widely known fact that the mbox 1 has problems on MAC. Some people have had success following these instructions:

1) Close iTunes, pro tools or anything that could be trying to use the audio device.

2) Open the Digi CoreAudio Manager. (This app should be running if you're not using Pro Tools, but want to use the mbox as for other computer audio like iTunes)

3) Set the Buffer Size in CoreAudio Manager to 256 (this is the main thing for resolving the issue)

4) Go to System Preferences > Sound and set the output to Digidesign HW

5) Open iTunes, pro tools, audio should work through the mbox

Note: If these steps don't work, try them again after restarting with the mbox connected

Hope this helps anyone looking to fix this issue!

And, if after all that, you're still having problems, try this:

Quit out of all open applications.

Trash the following preference files:

1. Mac HD > Users > (Your User Name) > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systempreferences.plist (delete this file)
2. Mac HD > Users > (Your User Name) > Library > Preferences > com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist (delete this file)
3. Mac HD > Users > (Your User Name) > Library > Preferences > com.digidesign.CoreAudioManager.plist (delete this file)
4. Mac HD > Users > (Your User Name) > Library > Preferences > ByHost > com.apple.systempreferences.xxxxxxxxxxxx.plist (delete this file)

Empty the trash, restart and let me know if it's working or not.

They stress (have the audio device plugged in and turned on before you turn your MAC power on. The device does not support the mac sleep function so if the MAC goes to sleep, you will need to reboot.

Installed pro tools 8 on macbook pro. when i try to open pro tools it says the hardware cannot be found. mbox2 is connected but the usb light is not on.

I had this problem as well... If this is a 2011 macbook pro you have os 10.6.7 which is not supported by avid at this time. We actually need to down grade to 10.6.6. You installation cd with your macbook pro is 10.6.6, so you'll need to install that, then go to the avid website and download pro tool le 8.0.5. Everything should work fine just don't upgrade to 10.6.7 until it has been approved by avid. If you need detailed steps look at the avid forum for pro tools. Step to uninstalling and installing the os can be found on youtube.com... Do not have your mbox plugged in when you install pro tools. I hope this helps!!!

Can't get my mini mbox usb working for protools 8 after inserting

You were supposed to install the software first (which holds the drivers for the hardware) before you plugged in the MBox. I had the same problem, but I had to use drastic measures and reinstall my OS.

MBox 1 Compatibility with new Macbook Pro Unibody and OSX 10.5.6?

unfortunately any pro tools application below version 7.4.2 is not compatible with leopard and I don't think you can use mbox 1 with the universal mac I may be wrong but I wanna say I tried a while back and even garageband wouldn't find it anymore but you can check for sure by going to the applications folder then open the utilities folder in there is an application called "Audio Midi Setup" and you can select the mbox in there if you see it but if not there is no patch or driver that I know of to get it working unless you upgrade pro tools which if you do upgrade I suggest getting mbox 2 and getting LE with it

Macbook pro does not detect digi 002 rack

yeah i have an intel imac and had the same problem. I upgraded to pt le 7.4 and now pro tools recognizes the 002 rack and it works fine, but still the core audio manager does not recognize the hardware. It says in "use" when I first turn on the 002 rack, then it says not connected after about 20 seconds. I don't think this really matters though because I have beeen able to do everything fine without having the core audio managr recognizing the 002 rack. I hope that helps

Mbox 1 no ouput from protools

Double check and Ensure your headphones work.
Ensure that the master level is turned all the way to the right (Playback). I would also check that the main audio out of the Mbox is functioning so use two TRS 1/4" [balanced] cables to and amp and speakers to ensure master output jacks give you the same result. If they do chances are the Mbox is bad, if not it could be just the headphone preamp is bad

1. shut down computer
2. unplugged all usb cables except keyboard/mouse
3. restarted computer
4. re-plugged usb cable from computer to mbox
5. opened protools session
6. hit play and now i'm hearing sound and everything seems normal.
