Possible that the smell is coming from the motor/inlet valve/ pump or the capacitor of the motor. so it is important that you need to have a closer observation to find the source of the smell.
Sometimes it can also be due to drain block and so the dirt accumulation could be stinking. If so remove the drain and clean the hose and fitting , back flush the pump and reset.

Your unit has a build up in it. Here is a trick I uses, set your washer on Hot and the longest wash cycle, use dish washing detergent, not dish counter soap. It has and ingredients in it that will stop the build up and clean out the unit at the same time. If you don't want to waste water, add house cleaning towels to your load.
Good luck, this does work...

What could be the problem causing the rotten egg smell in the water? We have changed the anode rod.shocked the well.no sulfur. We have kinetico softener. Use iron out salt. Water heater 2 yrs old.

Some water softeners you can increase the back wash time on the unit to clear out a smell or bad taste , rotten egg smell can be sulfur. You may need a well flush but seek a well company on that for there advice as its not cheap .

Top load washer smells like rotten eggs when water is draining into tub

As someone who has had a deep well drilled and found water, but water contaminated with iron and sulfur, I can tell you first hand about the rotten egg smell. The water softener will remove the iron that can turn clothes orange, but doesn't do anything to remove the rotten egg odor. You will need a charcoal (carbon) water filter to eliminate the sulfur smell.

Smelly water with water softener

Your local home depot sells a product called AFFRESH that is made for front loaders to clean mold as well as stagnant water smells from washing machines. I have also hear other techs suggest vinegar and water but personally I would much rather have the unit smelling nice and flowery smell instead of a vinegary smell. Also it is important to note your drain line should be at least 6" higher then the top of your washer if it were less then the water that is supposed to leave the machine goes back inside the machine thus giveing some a stagnant water smell or like bad eggs.If you have any further questions message me back
Thank you

The washing machine smells like rotten eggs on the rinse cycle. The clothes also smell afterwards as well. What can I do to resolve this?

Rotten egg stench is caused by sulphur content in the water or building up over time in your water heater. It can also build in a water system that is rarely run. Have you noticed this smell from other taps in your house? There are inline charcoal filters that can remove it from the water, or you can also try removing the water lines from the washer and running them awhile.

Is this new, or has it been happening for awhile?

Rough idling, poor gas milege

Usually the rotten egg smell is a clogged CAT. Is the engine light on and if so did you retrieve any codes?

Hi there, my machine is about 6 years old-I have never had a problem until recently my clothes were coming out of the machimne with scum on them. I got soda crystals and put the machine on a 90 wash which...

I read about liquid detergents and fabric softners not being the best to use in the machine so I used powder for the first time the other evening and the smell seemed to ease a good bit. its not gone fully but I will continue with the powder and see how I get on.

After about 18 months, washing machine smells like rotten egg/fart. Is there anyplace to clean it out?

If you have well water, Check your "Annode" Rods in the Hot Water Heater. Had mine do this. I had to Replace the Whole thing as it built up to much Contaminents from the "Hard" Water.

Inglis top load washer smells

Hi Nyree,
Check the center of the agitator, where you add softener.
Remove by pulling up. It will be full of old softener.
It may be necessary to remove the whole agitator ( set screw on bottom).
The inside also gets full of old softener.

Good Luck.

Rotten Egg Smell

Repair man told me this is common with front load washers. I was told to put Sunlight dish washing detergent (for dishwashers not hands) in the machine (about 1/2 cup) and do a hot wash with the machine empty.
