The remote just stopped working and it is not the battery. I was told that the code in the remote is not reading the code in the receiver, but I can't get to the receiver to sync them. Would a universal remote work?

Put in new batteries or check that the battery contact points inside the remote are free of rust or acid build-up from leaking batteries.

The receiver probably just needed resetting and reprogramming. I am surprised three are working - normally the receiver will only allow two.

COULD BE A WEAK REMOTE BATTERY A BAD REMOTE OR A BAD RECEIVER.
YOU CAN BUY AN EXTERNAL UNIVERSAL RECEIVER. THAT CAN BE MOUNTED CLOSER TO THE DOOR AND IS CHEAPER THAN REPLACING THE CIRCUIT BOARD.
BUT REMEMBER, I HAVE SEEN A RV POWER INVERTER PARKED NEXT TO THE GARAGE STOP A NEW OPENER FROM WORKING AT A DISTANCE OF 5 FEET.
SO I ALWAYS SUGGEST TURNING OFF POWER TO EVERYTHING YOU CAN JUST AS A TEST.

Remote stopped working - I bought a universal remote Phillips / Magnavox used a code in the 400 range and everything worked. Hope this helps.

you need to program one remote with a different code, power off or unplug one of the receivers. Go to the other receiver and hit the system info button at the receiver. Now read the remote code at the bottom of screen would be a number between 1 to 15. Program the remote for a different code than what it shows. Push and hold down the sat button on the remote and leave go light will blink, enter code say 14 and the pound key. You will see the light blink 3 times on the remote. Now that code is entered in the remote now with that system info screen up on the tv watch at bottom where code is and hit the record key on remote and you will see it change to 14. All done . now just plug back in your other receiver.

I had the same problem. In my case it was easy to spot. Thehe battery cover of the remote was removed by my little    girls and she was able to tinker with the dip switch inside the remote. So  i played with them. I gues the dafault is all switches up and it worked. Hope it it helps
