Are you keeping the large LCD screen on all the time? If so, that will dramatically reduce battery life. Same goes for flash use (although for 8 shots shouldn't be a factor) and constant stabilization. Also, by low battery do you mean that the camera is turning itself off and can't be turned back on? If just the icon is showing low battery life, it could be that the sensor wrong. I have an MP3 player that will say it has zero battery power, but will really play for another two hours. You should be able to take many more than 8 shots with one battery. I've taken 500 photos over a period of nine days on one battery with my FZ10. Viewfinder only, stabilization only when shooting, no flash use.
In my experience you need to conserve the battery power, i.e. only turn it on when you are ready to shoot. In 5 days I shot 500 pictures in Rocky Mountain National Park this August, 1500 pictures in the UK and Paris on a two week vacation early this year. I took my shots and turned it off when there wasn't a shot to be made. I was carrying a spare battery and also charged the battery using a power convertor in my car after the days hikes where over.
