It appeared that it installed the drivers but then locked my computer up. As soon as I turn the camera off everything works again. Connect the camera and everything locks up again. I tried rebooting, re-installing, restoring my computer to yesterday's state and re-installing and I get the same results everytime, no go. I am trying this with a high end Compaq laptop running XP Professional.
then I connected the camera to my kids piece of junk Win 2000 machine and it works fine.
I am frustrated and cannot find any help on the Panasonic site. Has anyone else connected the camera to a machine running XP Professional? Did it work fine or did you have similar problems?

Re: Installing to the drivers
Try disabling any background programs that may be running like virus scanners, etc. Then try it again. If it works, you can try to figure out if there is a program that is causing some kind of conflict.

Hi The drivers? Did you install the camera drivers on your computer? If so,check your camera driver's compatibility with the Operating System on the computer you're installing on.D o this by searching for your cameras drivers on the internet.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.
1. Please check in the Device Manager if the Camera is listed next to Imaging Device.
Press the Windows Logo+R key, it will open the RUN command window. In RUN command window type 'devmgmt.msc' and press the Enter key to open the Device Manager.
2. If the Camera is not listed in the Device Manager window, then reset the BIOS to default values and then try installing the Camera Driver or Camera Software.
NOTE: Disconnect all the external peripherals connected to the Computer except AC Adapter, then start the Computer and press the F2 or DEL key as soon as the Computer starts and the ACER logo appears to access the BIOS Setup screen.
Then, on the BIOS Setup screen, press the F9 key followed by the Enter key to reset the BIOS to default values and then press the F10 key to Save and Exit from the BIOS screen.
IMP: The Basic Input/Output System(BIOS) is a set of instructions stored on a ROM chip which handles all input-output functions. The BIOS communicates between the Operating System and the Computer's Hardware. Resetting the BIOS will reset the Hardware configuration to setup default values and data in the Computer will not be lost.
3. If the Camera is not listed in the "Device Manager" window even after resetting the BIOS to default values and re-installing the Camera Drivers and Software, then the Computer requires service to resolve the issue.
a.keep the camera switched on (no stand by ; check the batteries) and plugged to your PC
b.put the drivers cd in the cdrom drive and launch the installation
c.nevermind getting an error message, reboot your PC the usual way
d.when your desktop appears check if you see a balloon tip describing the installation of the camera
e.if not, unplug the camera, wait some seconds and plug it again
f.check if you see a balloon tip describing the installation of the camera
g.if not, repeat the procedure until at reboot the ballon tip shows a successful installation and the camera appears in your windows harware list
it "finally" worked for me under XP, though I still have an aditionnal problem with the "video capture device" not installing :-( (setup.exe from the cd failing...)
it would appear that the computer is not installing the right driver for the camera. the driver it needs to install is the usbstor, the same driver that it uses for flash drives. try another usb port, prefer to be direct and not hub.
if that doesnt work, go to device manager and uninstall the driver associated with the device, then unplug and replug the camera back in
disconnect the cam and restart you system and then after restarting connect back the cam and let the system detect it. and follow the installation procedure as computer appear.
if nothing work then uninstall the cam driver and restart. and then reinstall the cam driver again(disconnect first the cam from the laptop) after installing connect back the cam and let detect again the system.
if nothing work notify me for further instruction.
Once you installed the drivers and software from CD, once you connect the camera to USB port, it should automatically detect tyhe new device and configure the drivers and then say ready to use new device. Or at most say ready to use new device after reboot. You don't normally have to manually do anything. After this your My Computer should show an additional Disk Drive that represents your camera.
