Wd passport 500gb only works in mac. i need it to work in other computers

Try Disk Warrior to test and repair your HD! It's an excellent sofware! If the problem persist you need to re-initialize your HD!

Back up your data. On mac, run disk utility select erase tab select Mac Os Format Click erase.
Once done, you should be good to go

Does it work when plugged-in to any other PC/Mac? If not, it is DEFECTIVE. Return it, and get a replacement.

Does a different USB device (keyboard, mouse, memory-stick) work, when plugged into that USB port?

If the WD has been formatted in NTFS then the MAC cannot read or copy to this hard disk.
To make it compatible for the PC and MAC, format the WD Passport drive on your XP computer in FAT32 format. Then you can copy and exchange files between the PC and MAC.

go to WD site and get drivers for XP downlod and run that then try hopw fully it will work

Plug the drive into your PC.

Right Click on My Computer (or Computer in Vista/Windows 7) and select Manage.

Click on Disk Management.

Right Click the Volume in question and select Format. Select FAT32 in the options.

i know this wont help you, but i am having the exact same problem, so at least you not alone. if you have found anything out i would appreciate the feed back and visa versa if i figure it out.

You need to determine whether the problem is at the disk interface or at the computer interface. Will the drive mount on ANOTHER machine using FireWire? Will your computer mount ANOTHER device using FireWire? This will tell you which machine is at fault. It's not unheard of for the FireWire channels in a Mac to just go bad, and (unless it is a Mac Pro) it typically requires a logic board replacement to address. For a G5, this would not be cost-effective. On the other hand, as I say, it could just be a bad interface in the drive itself. It's up to you to determine which it is.
