These defects normally occur when printing is attempted on unsupported media or when the printer is set up for a different type of media than the media that is actually loaded into the machine. Check your media and ensure that it is suitable for use in the printer. Refer to the printer's user manual for information on supported media types and weights. Is the media you are printing on supported in the printer? Ensure that the paper type is set accurately on the printer operator panel (go to Menu/Paper Menu/Size-Type/Tray1/Type). Is the paper type set correctly on the printer operator panel? Change the paper weight setting to heavy on the printer operator panel (go to Menu/Paper Menu/Size-Type/Tray1/Type/Heavy Paper/Check button). Try printing your document again. Did the error return? If the error returns, please contact Lexmark Technical Support for further assistance.

SOURCE: Paper has black marks only on the edge
hello, it sound like you might have whats called a black spot on the image drum, try print a few blank pages and see if it starts to clear up for you.
SOURCE: black smudges on printed page
Are you sure this is a Designjet 450 (large format printer) and not a Deskjet 450 (portable printer)? The following assumes you have wispy black streaking on the printed side of the paper. If the streaking is on the back side then post more details of the printer model and the issue.
In either case the most likely cause is a buildup of fibers on the underside of the printheads or carriage, causing wisps of black ink to be dragged on the paper when the carriage reverses direction. You can clean the printer as shown at the following (though the details will be somewhat different for the Designjet or Deskjet....).

The fact that it's printing anything suggests that it is not a Toner problem. Remove the toner, and have a look at the run inside the printer, checking for any excess toner which is in there. Also, check the Drum and Imaging Unit for damage, wear and tear etc. There will also be a static strip near the imager, with a little tab which you can sweep across the unit to clean it.

I have also had this problem which I solved by changing the photoconductors of the colours shown.
you can try this.I am not sure if that is the best solution but it solved my problem
SOURCE: printing has smudge on edge
If it is right along the edge then the drum (well the cleaning blade of the drum) is faulty. In a unit like that I suspect it is all part of a toner cartridge. Try replacing that and I think you will be good.
