Hi Sarah from retired Englishman in SW France,

I would gently suggest as a first step that you clean the drain motor/pump lint tray/filter. So many 'faults' are caused by blocked filters and many machines will not even go to rinse or spin or release the door lock if there is any water still left inside.
Here are my complete and generic guidance notes for checking both the drain motor filter and the drain motor ;-0)
If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!). These panels are either held on by (plasic) screws or will just pull off. Most filters are held in by a round cover/knob. Sometimes the filter will not come out with the cover and you will have to persuade it to come out to play.

REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT (alternatively use a wet vac as sensibly suggested by VinnyB1234!)
It's surprising what people have found in theirs! It is always worthwhile checking it on a regular basis.
Now- whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- the power IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. Using something suitable like a glove see if it is easy to briefly slow the motor down. If it is easy then the motor is malfunctioning.

Methinks you could also do with a manual if you do not have one, to assist you in the future!
Manual
You will need to type into your search engine/web browser '(make model number) washer manual' and you should be presented with a number of sources from which you can either download for free or have to pay a nominal amount.
You could also try the manufacturer's web site direct ;-0)

If these have assisted you please consider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck!
John C

Hotpoint wd440 washer/dryer. 1st problem was it wouldn't drain so I cleared the pipe. Now the machine 'wash' light flashes during a wash. The washing machine doesn't seem to hold the water...

Make sure that the outlet of the pipe is at least as high above the floor as the top of the machine. If it is lower than the level of the water, it will just drain - there is no shut-off valve to stop it from doing this. Please rate this answer.

Water coming from soap compartment. is there someway to clean the dryer fluff from machine

It sounds like the water outlet is blocked. Same happened to me.
Unplug machine from mains.
Remove panel located on the rear near the base of machine.
In the bottom right corner you will see the outlet pipe and the pump.
Remove grey outlet pipe to get better access.
Undo the large jubilee clip where the black pipe joins the drum outlet.
Inside this pipe is a white plastic cage filter.
Check to see if anything is blocking it.

E15 code on display of Hotpoint ultima extra WD72.

E15 means that it is not draining fast enough. As well as checking the outlet pipes, check the filter leading to the pump. Disconnect the power and pipe. If possible take outside because there will be a residual amount of water. Remove the back panel, then disconnect the locking rings holding the tubes on. Your main target should be the big downflow rubber tube from the drum, in here is a plastic filter. In mine I found a child's sock... plus buttons...plus slime. Problem solved.

Washing comes out smelling horrible! Any ideas?

It is not the washer that is causing the prob, more likely to be coming from waste pipe, and or sink if the pipe is connected to the sink waste pipe.
Check and clean filter in washer if it has one, and remove waste pipe from washer and check outlet is not partially clogged up with sediment and other substances.
If pipe goes into sink waste, then pour a sink pipe cleaning fluid of some description down sink waste.
Also make sure you are not doing too many low temp wshes, as this can cause a prob as well
Do a boil wash at least once a month without clothes in but with powder in.
This is called a maintenance wash, and helps keep the inside of washer clean, and free from smells.
Please rate my solution.
Thanks.

Hotpoint ultima washer dryer

ok lay the machine on its side the side with the soap draw under you will find the outlet pipe runing to the pump then another hose going from the pump to the bottom of the drum. if you disconnect the hose from the bottom of the drum you will find the filter remove this hose from the other end and clean the filter and hose with hot water once replaced check the hose in tight it may be tricky to replace stand up the machine and test using water only and an empty drum.

Sounds like water pressure could be low or inlet pipe is kinked.

F04: possible filling or water level problem. Check water inlet pipe (or shut-off valve), or the outlet pipe, or the pump or pump filter if accessible (check for blockages or foreign objects). Also could be the water valve solenoid weak, causing filling to be too slow.

F05: possible draining (pumping off) problem, check the pump filter, or pump, outlet pipe, or U-BEND.

Have suffered the same problem. Suggest you remove back (after turning off electrical supply) and look at the water outlet pipe - you may have a sock or two in this - remember to reattach outlet and secure in position.
