When I repair a machine I use triflow oil on any metal to metal rotating part ie back and forth. On metal gears I put the tri flow grease. You can use it on plastic gears although sparingly. the nylon gears were design for quietness and were not recommended for grease. You want to get the old grease off as best you can. If it goes up and down or side to side then oil. If it continuously rotates then grease. Exception those bearings that have an oil hole vs a grease cap.
Probably what is happening is that the lens is dirty so can't read the disc. Cleaning it might restore the operation, but if the lens is damaged it will not.
I am sorry to say but your unit needs to be sent for repair. The TOC error shows up when the unit can't read the Table Of Contents of the disc (and simply shuts down after trying)....and in your case, you said it can't read any disc. This indicates that the lens unit has malfunctioned and needs to be repaired or replaced.
