DVD dies if I try to record to the end

I have a weird problem that occurs on my Hitachi DZ-MV550A NTSC DVD camcorders: If I try to record on a 60 minute DVD for more than 55 minutes, I get an error message (either 0901 or 2881), and I am unable to finalize the disc, so everything I've just recorded is permanently lost. I've called customer support, and they tell me that the camera shouldn't behave this way, but they don't have any idea why it does, and it's not under warranty anymore so they won't fix it unless I shell out a ton of money. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone have any idea why it happens or what to do about it? Is there any hope of ever recovering the stuff I've recorded on the bad DVDs? Could it be the brand of DVDs I'm using (Maxell DVD-R)? Thanks!

I also have this problem with my hitachi camcorder and have called with no resolution as well. I have purchased every type of DVD-R and they all do the same thing. It is soooo frustrating! I've lost countless memories of my son and want to cry every time. I'm ready to throw the camera away!

I'm not sure if this relates or not. I have a Sony DVR-10 stand alone DVD recorder and if I'm using DVD+R I have to leave some time for the DVD to be finalize. If I record all the way to end I just made coaster. Now if I use a DVD+RW I don't have to finalize, I can play it in a PC but not a DVD player. So to be safe I now record on DVD+RW and then just copy it to DVD+R or -R on the PC.

I just bought the Hitachi DZ-MV550A NTSC camcorder and I cant get it to play on dvd player on the TV Can you please help me Thank you

you need to finalize the disc. With the recorded disc in, hit the "disc navigation" button and you will see a place to hit "finalize". Move cursor to "finalize" and then click "yes". You can only finalize a disc using the AC power source, it will not do it from your battery. You should then be able to play it on your dvd player.

Where to find a charger for my hitachi dz-mv550a video camera.

Go to the Hitachi website and you will be able to buy the accessories. I should think that you will be able to obtain your charger from there.

The door might be stuck. Try "helping" it open manually after pressing the eject button. Otherwise, something is probably broken and you might have to call a repairman.

How long does it take to finalize? Can I finalize on other recorders?

The finalizing time depends on the remaining time on the DVD-R disc; Approximately 8 minutes to finalize with 20 minutes recording time on disc Approximately 3 minutes to finalize with 10 minutes recording time on disc Approximately 2 minutes to finalize with no recording time on disc. DVD-R discs recorded on the DVD-Camcorder cannot be finalized on other DVD-R Recorders or PCs.
