I have a trane xe1100 heat pump that the outside fan is not working properly. the fan will run for about 20 min-hr, then stop and humm. i turn off the air for about 2 hrs, then turn back on and the same sequence of evens happens. the fan has started the squeek today when it is on. the motor is also scalding hot. i am think its the motor on the fan, but could it be a thermal issue/

If you're not accustomed to checking capacitors, I wouldn't advise it. When motors operate with a weak run capacitor, it will cause the motor to struggle and shut down due to the excessive heat/amperage. It's certainly possible that it's time for a new motor and capacitor.

It's both. The motor has thermal protection, therefore it is shutting down on safety. Sounds like the motor needs replaced.

SOURCE: ruud heat pump outside fan

You may be right in looking at the motor. It uses a different speed on heat than cool. The heat cycle uses low speed, usually red. Some manufactures use blue (medium). Cool uses black, high speed. If you are confident, switch the low speed wire with the high speed and see if this changes anything. If the fan motor isn't the problem, check the other setting (cool) if the overload trips, you may need to look into a new capacitor or compressor, if so, you can install a hard start kit. these are start boosters, and are inexpensice, sometimes they will give another year out of the comp. but I've put them on and they have lasted 5 years.

SOURCE: Compressor fan not running

Does it look like the coils are frosting over? Is it steaming? Keep watching, after about 30 min does the fan come back on?

If yes to any/all the above then the unit is probably in defrost mode and yes the fan will stop blowing during that time, but restart when the unit goes back into regular heat mode.

During this time you will likely notice warmer heat from the vents than normal and the "AUX or EM HEAT" light will be on.

That is your backup heat system. It should automatically come on during a defrost cycle.

SOURCE: Trane air handler cycling rapidly

Depending on the age of your Trane unit. The fan relay has a time delay. This is a solid state board on the relay. Most of the time they stick on or off. Check for loose wires. But start with relay.

SOURCE: Trane XE1200 Fan Motor

Most likely problem with a not-so-old motor is the run capacitor for the fan.

Some units have fan & compressor capacitor combined into one -- others are separate.

The capacitor can be tested with a multi-meter with an MFD setting -- it should read reasonably close to the specs marked on the capacitor.

SOURCE: the fan is not movien on my trane high efficienct

If you are sure that the unit has power, look for the capacitor. A run capacitor will be oval shaped with a rupture disc on top. If it is ruptured then the capacitor needs replaced. If it is a round one, the top will be bulged and it will need replace with an exact match. There is a combination type that says fan and herm on it and it can be either of the first two mentioned. If this is not the problem then replace the fan with and exact match

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

How do I fix my Trane air handler to keep it from turning off about 20 seconds after being commanded to turn on?

Some units require both a start and a run capacitor. It's possible the wrong capacitor was replaced. It's also possible to add a run capacitor to a system to keep the fan running. There is an outside chance the bearings in the fan motor are worn to the point it's time to replace the motor.

Had 16 xi Trane heat pump installed 3 years ago. It ran well for the first couple of years. It began to stop heating and would blow cold air only. Have tried both aux heat and reg. heat to run and neither...

That's a complicated system that needs a qualified technician to service it. Lots of people can install them and they run fine, for a few years. Your indoor unit, operating on 2 heat elements, will feel like its blowing cold air even though its heating, just not so well. And not like you are accustomed to. Each element (5kw)=22.7amps, on average. So 3 elements operating should trip a breaker. Its probably been operating on 2 heat element plus the heat pump. And now you have trouble with the heat pump. If you can't TRUST the guys working on your equipment, try someone else. A second opinion. Normally a 3 or 4 ton unit will have 15kw heat installed, heatpump or not. 5 ton, 20kw. If yours is a 3-4ton, cooling, the 100amp(or normally two 60 amp) breaker should have been installed upon equipment change out. If yours is blowing cold all the time, something is wrong with your heatpump. The electric heat inside operates only when the heatpump can't keep up(real cold outside), the heatpump is in defrost(then it's actually in cooling mode), or if you have the tstat in aux/em. heat. Try a local trane dealer? Of a technician with 15-20 yrs under their belt. A trane dealer should have trane tech support also. BIG HELP!!!

Trane xr12 heat pump switching to aux

Sounds like the compressor is not running. Possibly a bad capacitor. Check system in cooling, see if it cools. If it does cool then you likely have a reversing valve issue. Good Luck!!
