How far does it get on the boot process? Does it open the operating system completely before shutting down? Do you get any error messages, and does it go to a black screen stating Windos wasn't shut down properly? Answer these and I'll have a better idea of what's going on.

O.K. Let's start by checking a few things that commonly cause this. First check the power supply with an ohm meter for the proper output, and check the jack on the machine. If the supply is starving the machine, or the jack is loose/broken it could cause this. Then pull the battery, and try starting with the supply only. It could be a bad battery or engaged battery fail safe. Then remove the memory, and try each chip one at a time in each slot. Could have a failing memory chip. Now, follow the link bellow and download the drivers for the power management system, battery, and anything else that may be relevant to the shutdown, definitely the power management and battery downloads. At this point, you've done all that you can do without getting professional help. If the problem persists, then it's going to be a failed motherboard component, most likely with the power management system. You can take it in for diagnostics, but in my experience from the Thinkpad's that have come through my shop, it's cheaper to replace the motherboard than it is to try to have the power management system repaired.

My IBM ThinkPad T42 screen does not turn off when i close the lid

there's a small switch usually located physically on the body of the laptop or sometimes on the inverter called a close lid switch. it may have gone bad, you can either try to replace the inverter to see if it helps or you can look for that physical switch

My IBM THINKPAD T42 screen turns to black after 30 to 40 seconds when i turn it on.

This indicates a hard drive problem, have it tested to confirm, because the hardware may need to be replaced. First try and reload windows with cd installation disc if that does not work the hard drive must be suspect.

IBM Think Pad screen is out. Turned black can't see any images. Can't find a Model number such as T42 or anything like that. What to do?

try to do this:

- remove the battery and charger (everything connected to the pc) then press the power button for 1 minute..
- plug back in the charger
- after few secs try to turn it on

hope this helps :D

you may check also the sticker on the back of the laptop where in you can see the SN or S/N and also the Model number

IBM thinkpad t42 boot up problem.

The most common reason is memory.

First, try to reseat (remove and reinsert).

If still a problem, test one module at a time.

Hope this helps.

Shuts down autometically

Also, have you changed anything lately? and, Did this just start happening out of the blue, or did something happen to cause this, ie... power failure, kicked the plug out, ran the battery completely dead, overheated, etc...?
