The service manual on page 8 shows how to adjust the Red/Blue/Green screen voltages. To get to the adjustment board, take the front speaker grill off (two screws at the bottom left and right) and set it aside. No need to disconnect any wires. Then remove the plywood board with 4 screws that exposes the screen/focus adjustments. The top 3 adjustments are for focus, and you need not mess with these. The bottom 3 adjustments are for Red/Blue/Green screen voltage rough adjustments. My screen showed red lines, so I had to turn the bottom right adjustment with a philips head screwdriver just slightly until the red gun retrace lines where no longer visible.

Time to replace the two lamps

Kc8hjc,

Wow man. My Sony KP-51HW40 has been fading to blue after about 1 minute of being turned on, but the picture for about the first 30 seconds was perfect.

I did the adjustments you mentioned and fixed my TV in 2 minutes.

Sony and a couple service places they told me about said I needed to spend between $300-$500 to replace all 3 cans. $900-$1,500 without labor fees. What jerks they are for not telling me about this possible fix.

Thanks again for sharing that process. Hope this helps alot of other people.

Normal pictures fades to blue screen within 30 seconds

The fix for this is here somewhere, as I had the same problem last January and the solution was posted here in March last year. I'll try to find it and post the link to it for you, later.

Blue screen

This is easy to fix, pull off the front grill and turn the bottom left trim pot anti clockwise until the picture comes back. I am asuming the picture there and then it fades to blue. There is a step by step instruction on how to get the whole thing apart http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html

Green flashes then tv turns off

or a new lamp. you could first replace the lamp.
the screen might work fine for a couple of seconds, but then it fades away or deteriorates. This means the lamp is going bad.

Sony KP-51HW40 51 in. Rear Projection turns blue

Hello......
First reduse the G2 voltage for the blue c.r.t,and watch if the unit works for longer period (offcource blue colour will be not present). After reducing G2 voltage to blue c.r.t still behaves the same than c.r.t is faulty and you have to replace.
Pls count the red led blinking when it goes off, incase it goes to std by mode.

Sony Kp-51hw40

Sounds like a bad solder connection in the sweep power supply. Not a repair for the novice I'm afraid. If you get it fixed before the set goes out completely, it should not be that expensive of a repair. Good Luck
