The printing information that is included as part of the Exif 2.2 header in the JPEG file, is read and used by a Print Image Matching enabled printer. If you have a compatible printer that has a built in media slot, you can insert the digital camera’s memory card into a card reader and then into a printer’s media slot. If you do not have a printer that accepts a card directly, you can use a plug-in for a graphics program such as Adobe PhotoShop 7.0, to utilize this information. CAMEDIA Master 4.03 and above supports Exif Print and PIM.

For some reason Canon have removed manuals from their pages. Second one I have seen missing today. Here is a copy and shows connecting a camera. If your unknown phone has a USB, you can try it. This is the page of the manual that shows it.

Does the DiMAGE 7 camera comply with PIM (Print Image Matching)?

Yes, the DiMAGE 7 is PIM-enabled. The camera records necessary information as it stores every image captured, and passes printing option information to a PIM-enabled printer to create optimum results. The PIM-enabled printers process the image automatically for excellent print quality.

How do I calibrate my monitor? I have a new epson 3100z and a Epson photo Printer890... PIM is a joke..... I use adobe for image editing and image expert to print... My photos look great on the monitor but...

PIM uses the exif-info in your original jpg. I'm not sure, but I think if you edit the picture this exif becomes useless (because it relates to the original), even if you save the file including the exif-info. Also, you apparently you need additional printing software to make use of PIM. This was in the news on this site sometime ago. If you search, you can find out where to download this software. If you've got photoshop, you should also have a program called adobe gamma. With this you can calibrate your monitor. You should be able to find it under start->configuration. When you have calibrated your monitor, you should of course not use the settings on your printer that push up the saturation/contrast of your images, or else you will get Disney-colors. (I made the mistake of using 'digital camera correction' on the 1270 myself). I get good results printing from photoshop, with a calibrated monitor as well as some media profiles for the paper I use (just calibrating your monitor will probably be enough to get pictures that are close to what is on the screen, I just haven't tried that yet). If you want to calibrate your monitor, there are some good tips on http://come.to/digitaldarkroom. (it's where I got what I know about this). Btw, I cant seem to reach the site right now, but it will probably be up again in a few hours.

Print Image Matching

PRINT Image Matching is a way to access greater color, set print gamma, and provide automatic image enhancements for prints from digital cameras. P.I.M. embeds information in each image to maximize the quality of the print from that image. The information includes data that will make the print more faithful to the original image, and data to enhance the print according to settings made on the camera.
