Xp should recognize it. Soudls like a problem with XP drivers. Leave the device connected and go t windows update and check the other drivers section. You can also open Media player and check for sync status and it should find the drivers or go to Sandisks web site of course and they should have a driver. It is a basic driver nothing spectacular.

pleae check if the cd includes a driver for won xp- it might not
put in cd manually, browse it using the win xplorer, until u find someting like setup.exe in the main directory of the cd or in the driver directory, double-click7 execute it. this may tell u if the driver software on cd supports win xp - else get the right driver here:
Go to sandisk.com. Click on downloads. Select sansa clip from the product list, then your operating system. You can get the updated driver and user manual.
Unplug your Sansa. Uninstall all the Sansa software from your computer, and reinstall the clean version from the Sandisk website. Then, replug the Sansa.
You might have vista, which is compatible with nothing. Go to the Sandisk website, and get the up-to-date software for Vista. If you have a Mac or Linux, forget it.
