My Nikon D 5200 when in scene mode will not change to other scenes

The scene modes are not apparent when viewing the shot. The scene modes adjust the exposure to help give you the results that particular scene is designed for. For example, the man running is to stop motion. The sets a fast shutter speed for you to help stop the action. You can’t see that happen before you take the picture. The portrait mode sets an open aperture to help blur the background. Etc.

Cannot get into portrait mode

You could be more specific about the issue:
  • What modes does it let you choose?
  • What happens when you press the scene button
The default scene mode is portrait mode.

You could consult the user manual at:

How are scene modes different than taking movies on a digital camera?

The scene modes only apply to stills, not movies. They're intended to set the camera appropriately for different things. Portrait mode for portraits, landscape mode for landscapes, etc. Experienced photographers don't use the same settings for shooting a landscape as they do for portraits: these modes attempt to mimic some of that.

Personally, I feel they don't always do the right thing, and thus prefer a camera that leaves me in control.
