So when you plug it in the a USB port it isn't found by windows?
Option: If you can remove the drive from the case, you can use a drive adapter that will allow you to access the drive itself. If the drive still can't be found in windows you can try Linux.Download Pinguy OS
If you can find the drive in computer manager? Then it might say it needs to be formatted. If you format the drive, you could then use a recover software like Recuva from filehippo.com (Worst Case)
Pinguy linux has great tools to help recover faulty drives also.
If this has help, please give me you vote..
1. Run System Restore
From the start menu choose (More) Programs>
Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
2. Choose "Create a restore point"
3. Click the Next button
4. Enter a description. Like Before I installed that hard
drive disk
5. Click the Next or Create button.
It's Next in Windows Me "Create" in Windows XP
Windows busies itself creating the restore point.
Soon a message appears on the screen, telling you that
the restore point has been created.
6. (It's OK in Windows Me. Close in Windows XP
System Restore closes
1.) Stop using the hard drive IMMEDIATELY! Do not drag or create any files on it. 2.) Download asoftech data recovery program: http://www.asoftech.com/adr/index.html 3.) Install and run the data recovery program against the hard disk
All your files are still stored on the hard drive. They're just invisible or inaccessible. You can recover them with data recovery software. http://www.asoftech.com/adr/ I used this one to recover files from my infected laptop and it worked.Anyway, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether you can recover your data. Hope this help!
Since your using NAS storage I assume the 1 TB drive is connected via your router? Is it powered by the USB port or plugged in via AC Adapter? If your powering the drive via USB go to the router setup page-NAS setup and make sure the router is not telling the USB port to save energy by powering down. Make sure the port is always on. The Router setup is proprietary to the Brand of router my Netgear R7000 with Kong DD-WRT Mod has a setting that controls power to the USB Ports. Make sure the drive enclosure isn't hot they have a tendancy to power down if they get to hot. Clean the vents if it has any so the drive stays at a normal operating temp
try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this file recovery program called asoftech data recovery to recover your files. http://www.asoftech.com/adr/
I have to say from the sounds you describe the Hard Drive is totally destroyed, the noises you can hear are the mechanical parts inside grinding and clanking together. If the information is critical it may be recovered by a specialist data recovery company, but we are talking £100's even £1000's to do the job, so otherwise I would suggest taking case apart and buying a new hard drive for it.
Sorry its not what you want to hear but it sounds very terminal to me.
The reason the PC can detect a device is that it can see the Interface card that sits between the USB port and the Hard Drive.
thanks... but the problem was on the "mode" buttons on the back ... now i know for sure that all data its gone ... but thanks for your help!
