I have a Toshiba Satellite A100, which is approximately 2 years old. The monitor recently started turning black at random intervals, and I have to reboot to get the monitor back. I have used the Toshiba repair disk to bring the laptop back to factory "out of box" settings. The problem persists.
Note: When running the repair disk, the monitor never goes black. The monitor only goes black after Windows boots-up fully, goes past the splash screen, and the desktop display shows. Sometimes it goes black within seconds, other times it's random.
Also, I don't think it is a back light issue, only because the monitor does fade... it just seems to turn off in a flash.

Sorry, that's does *not* fade.
The battery was reinstalled and the bios updated. It seems to have fixed the problem. However, the computer no longer hibernates properly... keeps on waking up. I can live with that. :-)
