My Francis Francis X1 does not heat up, the ON light comes on but not the light indicating that it is heating. I replaced the thermostat when that quit working about a year ago but there is no heat.

The most common reason the heating element isn't heating, theres a heat sensitive fuse in-line with the element. When they blow the units dead. Can be replaced by an appliance repair shop. Look in the yellow pages. (Do the yellow pages still exist)?
A thermal fuse, thermostat, power plug, or some connection may have gone out. The machine needs to be taken apart and diagnosed for an open circuit and repaired accordingly if you cherish this machine enough.
You can tell if the pump is working by the noise it makes. Mine got blocked with scale and I took it apart and cleaned out the boiler. It's possible; the boiler is bolted together with standard bolts (metric size). If you've got the interest the Francis Francis is easy to service; you will find a way into each part of it and clean it, and if you do it will work like new.
You should check the temperature of the water coming out from the machine when it show that is heated. If it is lower than 90 C then the thermostat inside the machine attached to the boiler is need to be replaced. If the temperature of the water is about 90C then the problem is with thermometer, and in this case is only an accesorie since the machine can faction properly and make a good espresso.
The thermostat is a bit that goes into a hole on the boiler, connected by a wire to the gauge. It is most likely that the thermostat has come unstuck from the boiler and is registering incorrectly.
Does the bottom light come on? The light is connected across the heating element and so if it is on the heating element is getting power. From looking at mine it looks like the bottom button for steam power bypasses the thermostat and uses the pressure switch to shut off the heating element. So if the light comes on when you press the steam switch but off when it isn't it is most likely your thermostat causing problems, if it never lights it is most likely the pressure switch. I do not claim to be an expert on the machine but from looking at mine that is what i would expect.
