Sounds like an overheating issue to me. Make sure to keep it in a well ventilated area. Also, the next time you turn it on, put your hand near the vents to see if any hot air is being expelled through them. If there is NO air being expelled, you have a bad fan. It may also be that the heatsinks aren't conducting enough heat from the processors...this could be due to bad thermal paste. You may need to send it in for repair for this you can call 1800mysony.

Try putting the backlight setting lower. I have mine on 4 and have had absolutely no issues since I got them a month ago.

Light of Death. This is the number 1 cause of pS3's dying. It is an
overheating issue linked to your CPU and GPU (the processor chips)
You will need to find a local PS3 repair shop who can repair this. Do
not try to attempt repairs seen on the internet yourself. You could
make things much worse and render the unit totally unresponsive. The
repair process takes about 3 hours.
