Hi! Welcome to FixYa!

USB versions are USB ver 1.1 and USB 2.0 and USB 2.0 has faster transfer rate.
When you're receiving this kind of message, that means you're using a USB device that is compatible with USB 2.0. This happens when you plugged in a USB 2.0 device to a USB 1.1 port on your computer. It simply notifies you that the USB device can perform faster when you have an available USB 2.0 port. I'm not really sure what kind of computer you have and what version of windows you have but you can actually check if you have USB 2.0 by going to Device Manager, click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers and look for "USB2 Enhanced Host Controller" if you don't have this, that means your computer has no USB 2.0 port. Hope this helps.

Recently, when I insert a USB flash drive into my laptop's USB port, I get the message: This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a HI-SPEED USB 2.0 port.

Your laptop has USB1 port and the USB 2 message will appear if you plug an USB 2 device into this USB port.
You maybe able to upgrade the USB port to USB 2 if there is a BIOS upgrade available from the laptop manufacturer's WEB site.
If not you maybe able to get an USB 2 PCMCIA card to install into the PCMCAI slot on your laptop.

How to upgrade to USB 2.0

hi this could be that the usb ports on your system are only usb v1 and not usb v2, if you require your items to run on usb v2 you will need to get a usb v2 pci card the things will work still just at a reduced rate of speed there will be no drivers for your usb ports to upgrade them as it is hardware related and not software related, usb v2 cards are generally cheep to buy and easy to install and set up....hope this helped

The system comments that this is not a usb 2 device

first thing is that message just means that your device will work at a reduced speed
second is that a high speed port or enhanced usb port is required to work it at enhanced speeds
to check if your usb port is enhanced goto : control panel / system properties / hardware tab / device mannager / then scroll down to usb controllers and see if it says enhanced next to your usb port if it does then you will need to get the updated usb driver for the enhanced speed

My usb port is not 2 - I keep getting a message that states that I need to get a hi speed usb device host controller. Where can I get this? I have an ibm thinkpad r40.

On some laptops that are older (an IBM R40 is a bit older) there are no high speed usb ports but if you plug in a usb device that is USB 2.0 into a usb port that is not high speed, the operating system (Sounds like Windows XP) will display that message even though you don't have a high speed usb controller. The USB device will still work but at a slower speed. You can ignore this message without a problem
