You appear to be aware of you antenna system with the separate meter attached so the tells me you dont punish a radio with an high swr. I am just guessing red wire/solder in mic cord at plug given that it is a side mic mic jack.
Stock mic
1- Shield (Ground)
2- Yellow (Audio)
3- Red (Transmit)
4- White (Receive)

How do you calibrate the SWR meter in a 706 mkiig? The service manual shows how but does not expand on what dummy loads to use.

A standing wave ratio meter is rarely required to be accurate and isn't usually used with a dummy load.

Mostly if the correct antenna is used the SWR meter is placed in series with it so the antenna can be adjusted or tuned to produce the lowest reading, which is the smallest amount of energy being reflected back into the transmitter or in other words the combination of transmitter and antenna are working as efficiently as it can be.

Clearly the readings are merely relative but a degree of accuracy is needed when an inefficient or mismatched antenna is used and the SWR cannot be lowered to a safe limit. When the SWR is too high the transmitter can be damaged and so it is a good idea to know roughly the reading where the transmitter stops being safe.

A dummy load would typically be used for testing and setting up a transmitter without radiating a signal. Nonsense and spurious signals are considered antisocial and even ******* so tweaking the power, adjusting the modulation and checking for stray harmonics would be carried out using a dummy load.

How do I set my swr on my galaxy dx 33 hml CB radio with a astatic swr meter and a top loaded tunable fire stick antenna

Watch the meter as you adjust the antenna. Try to get an SWR of 1:1, or as close to it as you can get.

This radio has swr meter

S.W.R == Standing Wave Ratio, this is a Relative measurement of the Amount of Power Going UP the Antenna, Versus the Amount of power being "Reflected" Down, the Antenna. This ratio, is displayed, as a reading on the meter. Also Often this SWR meter is dual used as an "S" Meter, this is used ti display relative signal levels from other transmitters. and is shown, as an "S" Scale. 0 - 9 on the meter.

Power meter on my dx-979 barely moves off of 0 when transmitting the swr meter also hovers around 1.0 no matter what channel...not used to seeing such low swr readings and almost nothing on the power...

I would check the radio with an external meter to see if it is the transmitter or the Meter in the radio. If it is the meter in the radio it could have a bad detection Diode or just oout of adjustment or even a bad calibration pot. other wise start looking to fix your transmitter like finals or other similar problem.

Well, some meters are set different than others,to see what is going on,you need a good WATT-SWR meter, but that is not a bad reading of SWR, you can get one at Radio Shack. You can not go by the meter that is on the radio,it,s probably not set right. hope this helps..
