It sounds like you have a poor connection on or a faulty ballast unit driving the screen backlight.
Replacement is fairly easy. Remove the rubber bungs around the screen bezel and remove the screws. Separate the bezel from the top and beneathe the screen is the ballast unit.

Thats a little old to be putting $100 in for a new screen. Anyway on the bottom of that laptop u will see holes marked with a K those all need be removed there are two in the battery compartment and the screws under the rubber stops on the lcd screen bezel. There should be a video on utube to show you the rest but the keyboard top power bezel and lcd bezel have to be removed to replace the screen. The screens are pretty basic as for removal once you know where the screws are. Look for a donor latop on ebay to save money.

It seems that your notebook does not have sata connection to Hard drive. Your harddrive is IDE connection. Sorry but you can't use SATA on this laptop.

you must replace your lcd inverter, you can obtain one for around 5-15 usd, you will need to open your lcd bezel(plastics)this it a common problem in this model, its easy just be carefull with your lcd. The inverter it is located under lcd, you need to remove the frontal plastic, locate the inverter and replace it. The dark it is because your inverter no longer turn on your backlight(a lamp to give brightness to your lcd inside your lcd)
This could be a hard work if you didnt have the tools or experience.

After removing to screws on the bezel, you need to slip a thin blade or spatular between the bezel and the LCD screen to gentle lever the bezel off, it is fixed with plastic clips and may even be fixed with glue.

It looks like you have to remove the bezel from the keyboard first to access the screws for the screen bezel.

There should bee screws on the bottom of the pc with a keyboard symbol or a K, remove those screws and the keyboard should pop right out.

Is this one of the keyboards that has the little plastic tabs that are springloaded holding it in at the top?
