what switch, where? the HP special one for wifi?
what OS, XP? ? windows XP the dead virus magnet PC?
the switch needs the HP driver to work.
use ethernet cable instead.
If the full Wlan wifi driver is installed, from HP
all that works.

what PC?, they have? model names, how old.'? 1 year , 15years?
did you do buy it with w10 on board new, or do the upgrade wrong.

what is the HP model, number they made these from 1984 to now.
vast laptops made, 1000s. in fact.
Causes:
1: the HP driver for WIFI chip is missing,
2: upgrading to w10 and it's not possible due to no w10 driver made.
3: virus infection. (OpSys corruption,etc)
4: bad wifi card (or the chip on it )

does the wifi chip show up in Device manager? window?
on my book there are 2 ways to enter or exit wifi airplane mode.
1: click the wifi icon in the system try
2: much the wifi on off on my HP top row, wifi key.
the first one above takes only the HP driver for wifi working
the second one take 2 HP drivers, the above ok, and the HP
command , keyboard, (upper) driver working, on many LT
if you upgrade to w10 using Microsofts, way, (wrong) the
#1 fails or #2 or both , you end up with bad drivers, when you
trust MS to that job.
So how'd w10 get on your unstated PC?

This often happens due to lack of correct drivers.You should check drivers from your manufacturer,and also check the condition of your wi-fi adaptor by using the device manager.

2008 OLD OLD PC, most then had no wifi card, so was added
and vast cards made , maker and model not told. at all.

The OS 2008 is XP and VISTa are you the last person on earth running that,?
first connect the PC to your working router, Ethernet jack./
see PC now works on the internet, no wifi needed but must be done to fetch the wifi drivers (easy)
in device manager, we click on the wifi card and it pick update driver. for this (secret) card. The card will never work lacking the right driver there.
if works or fails. if FAILS i bet the card you put there does not run on you unstated OS.

so you waited 14 years to buy and use a wifi card?
lots of pitfalls here even using cards that can never work here.
many PCs have wifi card black lists
and old cards do not run w10
and new cards will not run on XP or vista ever
and more but no card told so can not be specific ever.

You can try and using a third party application liek driver booster.

click start + control panel + system and bingo.
flashing a pc invites bricking it and never ever fixes this.

one model in fact have 4 chips used in a run. (production)
so lacking all that, getting the right driver, is hard.
very hard, lacking tools. to do so.
I have a scanner that tells me what chip is there.

realtek
intel
broadcom
and others, all used. here.

if you had the hp CD media kit it would work, from the CDs.
but you dont.
your PC i think came with VISTA 32 or 64, is it still vista
the dead OS? MS plug and play is dead for that.
if you upgraded vista to w7 like many do, then guess what
you get to learn what chip is there, and get a driver for w7
from the maker of the chip because HP does not support
w7/8/10 on this PC.

see why not posting your OS makes this 5 times more hard.
id have to answer for 5 OS, and 5 chips. wow.

Unfortunately the LG Viewty does not have wifi.
I also have a viewty, and I find that with a cheap data plan and the 3g internet speeds, lack of wifi isn't really a downside.
