Most digital cameras will allow you to select the resolution at which it captures images and/or videos. Some call it "resolution" while some call it "image size" or other similar terms.
The higher the resolution or larger the image size, the larger the file. Many online services restrict the maximum size of image and/or video files they accept. Lowering the resolution or reducing the image size will reduce the size of the files.

I have this camera, and like you I have taken photos in the Hi-resolution TIFF mode. What you are experiencing is not a camera problem, but a problem with the software you are using to view the pic. Tiff is an odd format that can be configured in different ways and not all viewing software understands all the different configurations. The viewer I use is called Faststone, and can be downloaded for free from the internet- try at www.downloads.com
Faststone displays my FZ20 TIFF files perfectly. They are very big (14Mb) though, and there is little advantage over the jpg if you use the high quality compression setting.
Save the scanned image as a TIFF for archiving. TIFF files can beresaved and edited without compression loss, thus maintaining the highquality of an image. If you are enlarging an original 4 x 6 photo to8.5 x 11, save the scanned image as a TIFF at 600 dpi resolution. TIFFsprovide more detail than other file formats. Scanned images for emailand posting on the Web, which are to be viewed on a monitor, should besaved as JPEGs at 75 or 100 dpi. JPEGs generate smaller file sizes,which download faster on the Internet. Increase the resolution to 150or 300 dpi only if you are emailing a scanned JPEG image for therecipient to print. Save JPEGs at the maximum quality setting.
If you are shooting with it on Jpeg that is about the correct size for you file. Even on Jpeg it should look way better then the S1 if not someting is wrong for sure. what are you exact settings.
The building blocks of your image library are the actual file formats in which you save your images. There are two major formats: compressed and uncompressed.
• The advantage of uncompressed storage is that you can save a maximum amount of image-forming information for color fidelity and clarity.
• Compressed file formats get rid of some information to shrink the file size (thereby increasing a disk's storage capacity).
We recommend saving all your work-in-progress images (equivalent to the negatives in film cameras) as TIFF files. This way they will remain at maximum quality, so you can create other versions for printing or e-mailing, and can save them in smaller, compressed files like JPEGs. The advantage is that you'll always be able to recreate an effect or enhancement by starting with the original TIFF file without losing image integrity.
At HQ quality I get at least 81 on a 64 mb. Smaller or larger cards I get numbers proportional to the card mb. I think the 16 number is based on the card that ships with the camera. You can buy as many SM cards as you need and offload them to your computer as you like and reuse the smartmedia.
lets start with resolution. 640x480@ 72dpi is 8.8in X 6.6in when you change that to your printer resloution (300 dpi) it becomes a 2.1inX1.6 in print. if you want a 4x5 image @300 dpi shoot the TIF 1200x1600 (actually it is a 1200X1500 for 4x5 proportion)

CAMEDIA Master can be used to display RAW data and save it in other image formats. A RAW plug-in is also available for Adobe Photoshop which also provides the ability to process images in 32-bit color depth.
TIFF: This is the highest-quality mode. images are saved as uncompressed data, which is the best for printing or image processing on a computer.
SHQ: This is a high quality mode using the JPEG format. Because the compression rate is very low, high quality images can be stored.
HQ: This is a high quality mode using JPEG format, with medium compression. Because the compression rate is higher than SHQ, file sizes are smaller. More images can be saved to a card. The file size can be changed in the 3:2 or Enlarge size mode as well as SHQ.
3:2 Mode: Ordinarily the image aspect ratio is set to 4:3. Due to change the ratio to 3:2, the picture size becomes 2592 x 1728 so that the image can be printed without losing the image borders at a photo lab. 3:2 can be set in the TIFF, SHQ, or HQ mode.
SQ1/SQ2: SQ1 is used for resolutions above 1600 x1200 and SQ2 is used for resolutions below 1600 x1200. For both, you can choose high compression to reduce noise or normal compression to save more images.

In order to shoot "HI" TIFF images first set the Image Size option to either "5M 2592x1944" or "3:2 2592x1728." Next, choose "HI" as the Image Quality option.
"HI" is only available in one of the manual exposure modes (P, S, A or M) and is not available in the "Auto" shooting mode. If "HI" is selected and the camera is switched to "Auto" the Image Quality will automatically switch to "FINE" mode and a JPEG image will be recorded.
Additionally, "HI" is only available in "S" Single frame Continuous shooting.
