When the camera is in "Continuous AF" Focus mode the camera will take a picture whenever the shutter release button is pressed, wether or not the subject is in focus.

When the LCD display is "off" the focus mode is automatically switched to "Single AF" mode (since there is no way for the user to confirm that the proper subject is focused) and unless focus is locked the camera cannot fire. When the camera is in "Continuous AF" Focus mode the camera will take a picture whenever the shutter release button is pressed, wether or not the subject is in focus. You can take a photo with the monitor off, but the camera will have to lock focus before it can fire and will not respond as quickly as with the monitor on.

I don't know how to use the lcd screen when taking pictures

Many cameras that have view finders do not support use of the LCD display to compose or frame a picture. This is generally to conserve battery life of the camera. Most of these cameras limit how long a picture is displayed on the screen to 10 or 15 seconds, immediately after taking for the very same reason.

The exception would be a camera that lacks a view finder - or has a menu item that allows the user to compose the picture on the LCD in addition to the viewfinder. Some manufacturers call this "live view". Check your camera manual to see if it is supported. If so, be sure to buy extra batteries!

I hope this helps & good luck!

I can only shoot with optical eye piece, monitor works for everything except framing and viewing shot

I'd have a good read through you instructions, many good digital cameras have an option which enables you to turn the LCD off to conserve the batteries.

How can I increase battery life?

Transferring images from the camera to the computer requires a lot of battery power. It is recommended to use the AC adapter when transferring pictures to conserve battery life. If not using the AC adapter, make sure your batteries are fully charged and use the highest possible serial speed when connecting the camera to the computer. After transferring your images remember to shut off the camera, otherwise the camera will remain "awake" and will continue to wear down the batteries. The LCD display also uses much battery power and should be used sparingly when trying to conserve power usage. Battery life can be improved by using AA sized lithium batteries, rechargeable AA Ni-Cad batteries, or rechargeable AA Ni-MH batteries instead of AA sized alkaline batteries.

"Battery Save"

This setting helps to conserve battery power by restricting several functions: The back LCD monitor cannot be turned on while in a shooting mode, it will turn on while in the Play mode. Full-Time AF (auto focus) cannot be used and the viewfinder will turn off after the 30 sec. without use.

Battery

The best way to conserve battery power is to limit the use of the LCD monitor.
