Menu, controller and display button locked

I gave my camera to a friend for a few days. Now that I have it back I can take photos, but the menu, 4 way controller and the display button are all locked. When I try to use these options an orange padlock appears on my screen, has anyone else had this problem? Would anyone know how I can clear this so that I can use the menu and other features. I have been through the manual and can't seem to find anything regarding this problem. What would my friend have done to create this problem? Any help would be much appreciated.

It means that the camera is in 'Green' mode. Turn off the green mode by pressing the 'Green' button (also used as the delete button when in playback mode).

Could be your friend has turned on the SD memory card lock. From page 136 of the camera manual: The SD Memory Card is write-protected. Only menu operation and mode change are possible.

Welcome to Fixya. If the you don't know the lock code you can try the steps below so that you can reset the phone to it's factory state.
1. Power off phone. 2. Hold camera button and power on phone at the same time. 3. Release the camera button when prompted to. 4. You will see a message screen telling you to press the up or down volume button 5. Press and HOLD the down volume key (ignore message 'Volume Up Key Pressed') 6. When triangle and phone screen appears 7. Press on the screen just above the back key 8. You will now see the "Motorola system recovery" menu
At this point you will have three choices:
1. reboot system now [Menu+Back] 2. apply [Alt+S] 3. wipedata/factory reset [Alt+W]
Select the third option to do a factory reset.
Thanks You can simply tap an item to select it.

How can I erase my sd card? I thought it was empty, but when I went to print from my disk only, it said I have like 1600+ photos on it! I should have only had 152, according to what I thought I'd erased....

First of all make sure the write protect lock is off on the left hand side of the memory card, the slide lock should be in the up position.

Press the MENU/OK button on the camera to display the menu. Use < or > buttons to select ERASE. Then use the up/down buttons to select FORMAT, then press the MENU/OK button.
Press the BACK button to exit the menu.

Please be aware that all data is erased from the card so make sure to back up any file you might want.

Viewing photos without time and date

Unfortunately the Nikon Coolpix 7900 does not have a 'display' button to take care of this. So you need to go through Menu to access Setup menu. Here you will get option to customize the display.

Shutter release/AE lock and control panel display

Same problem that would not allow me to take a picture without pressing the LOCK button on my Nikon 8700. Here is how I believe I fixed the problem:

Turn the camera ON.

Press MENU button on your camera to bring up the menu.

Scroll down to SET-UP, open the SET-UP menu by scrolling right.

In the SET-UP menu, scroll all the way down to FUNC (Controls) on page 2/3 , open the FUNC (Controls) menu by scrolling right.

You are now presented with 2 options:FUNC and AE-L, AF-L)

Select the FUNC option by right scrolling.

Choose the 2nd option: i.e the mountain, flower and timer icon (distance, macro and self-timer icon) by right scrolling.

Press the MENU button to get out of the menu.

Attempt to take a picture without pressing LOCK.

Should work! Anyways, it worked for me.

I can't delete locked or protected photos from my camera

More to the point, you can download a PDF copy of the manual here. Just input the model number and hit continue. While there, you may also want to check for firmware updates. As for locked/protected files, check and see if the write protect tab on your memory stick has been engaged.

Here's the deletion procedure:

  • Turn on the camera.
  • Press the MENU button.
  • Press the right arrow on the control button until the Setup menu is displayed.
  • Press the down arrow to select the icon for Internal Memory Tool or Memory Stick Tool.
  • Press the right arrow button.
  • Press to down arrow button to select Format.
  • Press the right arrow button.
  • Press the up arrow button to select OK.
  • Press the center of the control button.
  • Press the up arrow to select OK.
  • Press the center of the control button.
