This commonly occurs when the load is unevenly balanced and the barrel bounces slightly off track, causing the clear cover to lift and tripping the safety switch which is held in place by the small tabs on the cover. We solved this by sitting a coiled extension cord on top of the cover - holding it down properly and reducing a little bit of the insane noise this machine makes!

I used to have exactly that same rock tumbler. I have a bunch of polished rocks out in my garden that the kids and I made with that thing.
