No you can't, you need a new remote. You can only do basics without the remote.

Try connecting one speaker at a time. The "protect" indicates a short or improper impedence (ohms) in one of the speaker lines. it may not be directly shorted, but I'll need to know what you have hooked up for speakers. Also, do you have any electronic meters?

error 12 is when you autocalibrate and do not have the microphone connected, when that is the case the receiver can not detect the speakers.
