The best way to clean a lens is to use a piece of lint free lens cleaning tissue and a small amount of lens cleaning solution. Place a drop or two of cleaner on the tissue (never directly onto the lens) and then wipe the lens in a circular motion, removing any marks or smear. Additionally a smaller blower brush can be used to simply blow off or brush away loose dust. If the above supplies are not available a clean, dry, soft, lint free cloth can be used to clean the lens. The same method can be used to clean the viewfinder eyepiece of Nikon cameras.

Nikon d5000 says lens not fitted

Still make sure you did turn the lens till it clicks.
You could remove the lens, and clean all contacts both from the camera and the lens, with a dry and clean cloth. Don't use any sharp tool in or close by a camera.
After cleaning, refit the lens. If the error comes back, try another lens, to locate if the lens has an error, or the camera does.

Lens cleaning

Buy a lens pen and carefully clean the lens yourself. it will set you back about 10 dollar. If you never removed the lens form your camera, it is only the front lens you need to clean. Don't use any fluid, unless it says social for photo camera lenses. If you scratched the lens, no way it can be cleaned or repaired it. It would be cheaper to buy a new lens.

Auto focus dosen't work

You are sure on both, the camera and the lens, AF is selected?
If you did and the lens does not work, please try anther lens, to find out, if it is a malfunction of the lens or of the camera.
You also could check if all contacts on the lens and in the camera are clean and not corroded. If the are not clean and shining, please use a dry cloth to carefully rub the contacts clean. Be careful not to bend any contact in that process. please be careful not to leave any dust n the camera or lens. Use the lens and camera caps when you are not cleaning one of them.

Busy and or Error 01

For error message 01 the manual says: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean lens contacts.
Solve: Clean the electrical contacts on the camera and lens and use a Canon lens.
SO if you are using a different lens or a non Canon lens this could be what is wrong.

If you never changed a lens, it still can be that something went wrong in the communication between the camera and lens. Just careful remove the lens and with a dry and lint free cloth, clean all contacts on the lens and in the camera. While working on the lens, close the camera with the camera cap, or put the camera face down.
Don't use anything sharp while working on a lens or a camera.

The error message reads: communication between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts. What does this mean? I need to get this matter fixed, as I use my camera daily for my job. Can...

Try cleaning the electrical contacts on the back of the lens and in the lens mount on the camera body.

Do you have another lens and/or camera body you can try? Does this lens work on another body, or does another lens work on this body?

My lens locked suddenly Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens on a 20D body

Possible power problem make sure the camera has sufficient battery power and is functioning as it should (less the lens) if this is okay then the problem is between the lens and body gold contacts. It's a quick and easy repair you can do yourself. Shut the camera off remove the lens and put the body cap on the camera if you don't have a body cap place the camera on a clean lint free surface like a glass table or counter top. Use a new clean red pencil eraser to gently rub the gold contacts on the lens. Hold the lens as vertical as possible when you are doing this to minimize the rubber dust getting into the rear lens element. Clean the area of rubber dust with a puffer blower or lens cloth not a tissue. Set the lens down on the clean lint free surface and gently clean the gold contacts in the camera body keeping the camera lens mount down to minimize any rubber dust from getting into the sensor area. Clean the contacts with a lens cloth only do not use a blower/puffer, re-install the lens and it should come on. When installing the lens make sure it makes a solid click and locks securely in place.

TAKE THE LENS OFF THE CAMERA. SEE IF YOUR CONTACTS ON THE CAMERA AND THE LENS ARE CLEAN, PASS A CLEAN PENCIL ERASER ON THE CONTACTS, DON'T LET RUBBINGS FALL INTO CAMERA!! TRY THE LENS NOW.

Canon err 01

This error means "Communication between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts." If you are using the same lens on both cameras, the problem is with the metal contacts on the rear of the lens where it communicates with the camera body. You can gently clean these contacts by using a clean pencil eraser. Make sure you hold the lens "bottom down" as you clean it so that the eraser debris falls to the table instead of inside the lens!
