During the installation of Nikon View or Picture Project, your system is checked for an installed copy of Adobe Photoshop. If a copy with the minimum version is found, Nikon View will install file format filters which will allow Photoshop to open a NEF/RAW file directly (there are other plugins for YCBCR TIFF format from supported cameras). If you have the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" software installed (optional in Photoshop version 7, included in Photoshop version CS) the Nikon file filters will open the file. If you prefer to continue using the Adobe software, find and remove the following plugins: Nikon NEF Plugin (Nikon View) Nikon NEF Plugin LE (Picture Project) After a restart of Adobe Photoshop, the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" plugin will handle the opening of Nikon NEF/RAW format files. Please note that there was an update for Adobe Camera Raw plugin for support of D70 and Coolpix 8700 RAW files, if you encounter difficulty opening raw files from any Nikon product after removal of the Nikon Plugins, please visit the Adobe support site to obtain the appropriate update for the Adobe Camera Raw plugin.

You need to open it with Adobe Camera RAW, and the problem is not within the camera, but within your PC/MAC software which you're using ;)

Tou need software that allows you to view RAW files: Nikon Capture, the software that may have come with the camera, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Others. Just google "view NEF file software

I have a nikon d90 and i can't download the camera raw 4.6 plugin from the adobe site so i can't open the raw files on camera raw and photoshop cs4. Help!

Camera RAW and PhotoShop CS3

To start, before building an action or a droplet to convert from Raw, you need at least either the RAW plugin, or the photoshop lightroom plugin, depending on the version of Photoshop. I assume you have the plugin installed on your Photoshop. See: Adobe - Adobe Photoshop CS4: Digital camera raw file support.

A better choice would be having the Nikon Capture NX , that give you the option to work on the native RAW format from Nikon.

Once you have installed a plugin to manage RAW format files you can record an action or droplet to automate the process. If youj want more automation, you set an action first, as a batch process to do action on a single file, then build a droplet on the action batch file. A droplet will give more automation, since droplets can be activated by dropping a folder of images onto that specific Droplet Process, and they will apply the batch process to all the files contained in the folder.

The way you build the batch action depends much on the version of Photoshop you are using and on the plugin used. Here an example using Adobe PS CS2 and camera Raw plugin: Raw Format Workflow with Adobe Bridge .

The action can be saved using the recorder, so that the procedure will de quite instinctive. See the tutorials below for step-by-step instructions.

Help!!!i lost the software that came with my fuji fine pix S6500

Opening RAW images from Nikon D70 on photoshop

A Photoshop Raw file is a Photoshop PSD file without a header. The header
information must be entered when the file is imported into Photoshop. The
raw format is used import and export bitmap data using a very simple,
uncompressed binary format.

Nikon NEF files no longer open in cs2

The Nikon NEF Plug-in for Photoshop

(In Windows, search "plug" to find "P2_NEFPlugin_En.pdf" in the NikonPictureProjectReferenceManual folder. You should have copied this manual to your HD from your PictureProject CD when you installed PictureProject.)

D40x NEF Photoshop Plugin -

file: "Nikon NEF Plugin LE.8bi"

Search Windows for "*.8bi"

These two plugins can be found at C:\Program Files\Nikon\PictureProject

Follow these instructions for (taken from the above reference manual)

**Note: before you uninstall PictureProject back up all of you NEF files.

"Installing the Nikon NEF Plug-in

Two Photoshop plug-ins are included with PictureProject: a Nikon NEF Plugin LE plug-in for viewing RAW images, and a Nikon YCC TIFF plug-in for viewing YCbCr-TIFF images (in Windows, these fi les have the extension “*.8bi”). These plug-ins can be used with Adobe Photoshop Elements version 2.0 or later and with Adobe Photoshop version 6.0 or later (Windows) or 7.0 or later (Macintosh). Both plug-ins are copied to the PictureProject application folder when PictureProject is installed (in the Macintosh version, the plug-ins are copied
to the “File formats” folder in the PictureProject application folder). If a copy of Photoshop is detected at installation, the plug-ins will also be copied to the Photoshop plug-ins folder. Users who install Photoshop after installing PictureProject should fi rst uninstall PictureProject, and then reinstall PictureProject when installation of Photoshop is complete."

After you open the RAW NEF picture file in Photoshop save it in lossless .psd format for further editing.
