I bought a Calypso washer so that my clothes would be handled gently. I had another Whirlpool washer dryer combo for 26 years without so much as a hiccup. Within months of purchase, I started noticing grey streaks on my clothes. Then I started noticing tears and splits in my clothes. I contacted the store where it was purchased and they replaced the gasket between the bottom of the drum/tub and the bottom of the tub. That lasted a few months and the whole process started again. This time, a towel got stuck between the gasket and the wall of the drum/tub. And this time I called Whirlpool. Whirlpool paid for the repair and it lasted three and a half years. Then it happened again. The dealer came out and replaced the gasket again and implied that I was not properly loading the washer. I am very careful with my clothes, putting underware in washing bags and washing like weight fabrics together, so I don't see how I could be causing this problem.
This morning the washer left its tell-tale grey streaks on a brand new
$78 tee shirt, and Whirlpool's best advice, since the machine is no longer under warranty, is to have a certified repairman out tomorrow.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Whirlpool says this is not a common problem.
I can assure you this IS a common problem. I can't tell you how many customers I have had in the past that complained about their Calypso's leaving the same marks on their clothing. The problem occurs because of the suction on the clothes as the washer extracts water from them during the final nunator cycle. The nunator is the wash plate that the clothes get caught in. The manufacturer's cure for this problem was to come up with a modified control board that reduces the final nunator time and minimizes the suction action on your clothing. The replacement control board part number is 8571359. I have ordered and installed this board on a few Calypso's. I'm surprised that nobody advised you of this in the past. If you call Whirpool back and they deny this, I got this information from them. It may be worth your while to contact them again to see if there is a recall on this and if they would cover the cost of the repairs.

Yes! Same trouble - I just pulled half of a blanket out of the gasket/drum edge. I'm running an empty load now to see whether there is any damage... so far so good. Good is a strong word for it, though. Unfortunately, looks like I will have to order a gasket right now to be able to do laundry this week...
We are SO tired of troubles from this machine! Off balance notices, Lots of troubles with the mechanism that was later recalled, but we were never notified because we had never used the Sears repairman (???!!!) as my husband is pretty handy... I can go on. In fact, if this machine wasn't agitating at the moment, I'd be looking for a new machine to purchase!
That's what hubby promised - he is ready to drop kick it. Perhaps I should go find myself a monkey wrench? ;)
BTW, Ours is the Kenmore Elite Calypso (same thing), bought in late '01. Gone, I fear, are the days of having a washer for 26 years, eh?
I've had the problems for years as well!!! Never had the money to have someone come do something about it. I can't believe it. One poster said "Lots of troubles with the mechanism that was later recalled", I'm not sure what was recalled because when I called Whirlpool last night to see about this, they said there were no recalls on the machine.
I'm soooo sick of this washer!!! It never fails, it always happens to at least one article of clothing in my whites load. We have even taken the gasket off many times and cleaned it and it happens a load or 2 later again.
