2003 Dodge Dakota Club Cab Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jun 24, 2011

I have a 2003 dodge dakota. 4.7l. I get codes p0685 and p0688. No start no spark. Relay is good. But voltage drops when using a voltage meter on one of the grounds in the pdc. Any live wire and that ground has power drop. Is that normal? Or is. there a short in that ground? If it is any place I should start looking?

This means the relay may look good, but is shorting or stuck in the open position, thus needs to be replaced.

  • Anonymous Jun 24, 2011

Its not the relay. Replaced that and it didn't work. That leaves a short. Could it be in the pdc itself. Seems to keep voltage in the wiring harness.

  • Anonymous Jun 24, 2011

It could be. I would start by grounding the control wire from the ASD relay at the Powertrain Control Module connector. Also try test the ASD relay operation with the ATM tests found in a compatible scan tool. If you can get access to a scanner, you can run an ATM test to see if everything is working. In addition, you can look for other PCM data that causes it not to ground the ASD relay. Check the cam/crank sensor signal and missing or erratic patterns.

Turn the ignition off.Disconnect the PCM harness connector.Disconnect the IPM C4 harness connector. Measure the resistance of the ASD Output circuit between the IPM harnessconnector and the PCM harness connector. Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?

NOTE: Inspect the ASD Relay fuse located in the IPM. If the ASD Relay fuse is open, repair the cause of the open first before continuing. Inspect the ASD Relay Output circuit for a short to ground for the cause of the open fuse.NOTE: Diagnose P685 - Auto Shutdown Relay Control Circuit first if set along with this DTC.

With the DRBIII, erase the DTC.Attempt to start the engine. If the engine will not start, crank the engine for at least15 seconds. It may be necessary to repeat several times.Does the DTC reset?

Jumped the relay ground. Started right up. But heard a buzzing coming from the idle air control. Could it be bad and the pcm is kicking in the auto shutdown? Or should I still look for a short?

Code p0688

When a code P0688 is stored, it means that the powertrain control module (PCM), has detected an abnormality in the relay which supplies it with voltage. In this case the relay sensor circuit is open. Open could be translated as disconnected.
Symptoms of a P0688 trouble code include:
- Delayed or no start
- Electrical accessories may be inoperative
- Engine drivability issues
A diagnostic scanner and a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM) will be required to diagnose a code P0688.
Test all system fuses and relays to make sure the PCM power supply relay is being supplied with battery voltage. If constant (or switched) voltage is not present at the power relay connector, trace the appropriate circuit back to the fuse or relay from which it originates. Repair or replace defective fuses or fusible links as required.

I own a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. Car won't Start. Last nights codes P2305 and P0522. Changed Ignition coil. New codes P0685 and P0688.

Best Manuals I suggest you try one of those instant download manuals. My nephew bought one for me when my car broke and we could fix it all by ourselves with the manual costing $10. This website reliable-store.com is very good for this.
?Try it.

My 1993 dogde dakota would not start but it crank

Check primary voltage to ignition coil, engine cranking, dark green wire with orange tracer. Check the same wire at fuel injectors, that voltage comes from asd relay. I'm not saying the relay is faulty, check the crank sensor. Any applicable trouble codes?

Van won't start after washing

I'm not sure about the codes, but I can tell you to NEVER wash your motor with an up hill spray,, chances are you got the plugs wet, and inside the plug caps, take them off and use a high prssure air stream to dry them out

Thanks, Terry

I gat 3 cods P0129, P0685 and P0688 and then cam the "enable" I don't start the engine. What is the problem? Can you help me?

P0129-This Relates to Pressure for Barometric is too Low
P0685-This Relates to Open circuit for PCM/ECM Power Relay Control
P0688-This Relates to Circuit for PCM/ECM Power Relay Sense
I am not 100% sure that these are correct as I had to go through Chrysler settings to find this model.
I would check the airflow sensor first on the ducting from air cleaner to engine.
Check the spark plugs to ensure that they haven't fouled.
I hope this helps you,or get back to me with your results for further diagnosis.
