Insert memory card and says card not read, format disk. Camera menu wont allow formatting.

Maybe it is having trouble with the size of the memory. Memory cards have grown enormously in capacity in the last couple of years, and even relatively new cameras may not be able to cope with the memory size of the newest cards.

SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

Camera says no memory after taking only 4 pics.

Camera has built-in memory but its small in capacity. Buy new memory card and install it in camera slot and memory card will hold more picture data. Regarding pictures quantity, it depends what size of memory card like...1GB, 2GB etc. greater size, more storage.
