If the camera came from Japan, there will be no english in the camera. If the camera had English before, you could try to switch the language back, by using the manual and count lines in the menus, to "feel" what part of the menu you are. (Setup menu)
Slide the REC/PLAYBACK switch to the REC position (the camera icon). Set the mode dial to the camera icon. Press the MENU/SET button. Press cursor-left. Select the wrench icon. Press cursor-right. Select the talking-head icon and press MENU/SET.
Turn the camera on. Slide the REC/PLAYBACK switch to REC (camera icon) and press [MODE]. Press cursor-left, use cursor-up/down to select Setup (wrench icon), and press cursor-right. Use cursor-up/down to select the speech bubble icon, press cursor-right, use cursor-up/down to select "English" and press MENU/SET. Press MENU/SET again to close the menu.

Press the MENU button to display the menu. Use down to select the toolbox, then press O (that's the center button on the multiselector). Use the cursor keys to select the wrench and hammer, then press O. Select the second item on that menu--that should be "Language". One of the choices should say "English" in English. Select that one and press O.
It appears that the camera comes in different versions, depending on the region. The "western" version has English, German and French language, but not Japanese. If you camera has Japanese menu, it is probably intended for the Asian market. It may not have English menu.
You can switch language like this:
Press Menu/OK, select the far most right option (Set), select the top option (Setup), press Menu/OK.
Select the second lowest option (laguage) (the lowest being Reset),
use > to display available languages. Use up- or down arrow to select the language and press Menu/OK.
