So you want to slave the 3020 to the 1082, right? Use the Pre-outs on the AVR to feed the amp. I imagine the AVR manual, which I cannot find, talks about that.

Pre-outs are, by definition, the last point between the volume & tone controls and the (built-in) amplifiers. They allow one to use external amplifiers for certain channels and retain LOCAL control of the sound properties. Many external amps used for this purpose are are simply big dumb power amps and don't even have their own volume controls. The typical self-powered sub is a prime example of how pre-outs are intended to work.
On your receiver, using the preamps allows augmenting OR functionally replacing the internal amps on a specific-channel basis. If you had power-hungry front speakers. for example, you could drive them by a more-powerful amp instead of attaching them to the AVR.
I think you really want to use the 3020 partially to listen to AVR1082-sources in another room. THAT would require running RCA cables to it. This AVR has the ability to re-assign the SB channels as a Zone and would require only running speaker wire to remote speakers with local AVR1082 control.
Again, it's all in the manual (which you SHOULD READ), that can be found athttp://usa.denon.com/us/downloads/pages/... Check 'search by text' and key in 'avr1082'.
I really can't find the AVC 3020 manual but a picture I found herehttp://cgi.ebay.pl/DENON-AVC-3020-Precis... shows the Front Channel Pre-Main jumpers on the back. If they're missing you will have an amp that is silent for its own attached sources. Short RCA cables would suffice.
If you don't have and can't find the AVC3020 manual you REALLY should study the other AVR and wrap your head around the concepts of multichannel AVR's. Much of the functionality of AVR's is common to most of them. Do some Search Engine research, too.

I guess I'm really asking two questions. One is that you are correct, I want the 3020 to be a slave to the 1082 receiver but when I connect the pre-out, the sound comes through but I can't control the sound through the amp only through the receiver. Is this normal? I always thought that you can control the amp using its own controls (ie volume, bass, treble, etc).
Second, if I want the denon 3020 amp to be a "receiver", shouldn't I be able to do it? It has all of the connections and jacks to connect external components such as a cd player and a DVD player. Right now when I connect separately as a stand alone receiver, it doesn't work.
Thanks that really helped. My biggest problem was not recognizing that the manual was showing the jumpers (I didn't even know what they were). The 3020 amp I received didn't have them since the amp was being used as a dumb amp in another room. But after looking at the picture you linked - it all came together. Great help, I really appreciate it.
