When I turn on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5520) everything turns on fine, but the screens compeltely dark or really faint, I hear it may range from a blown bulb, to a inverter problem to wiring problems, but is there anything else that might be causeing it?

Have you tried to use the external display monitor hook up on the Laptop. If this does work this way - then your inverter may have fried.

If the picture is really faint, it could be a problem with the inverter circuit. A defective backlight bulb would cause a totally dark screen, images may only be visible if you shine a bright flashlight on it.

Unfortunately, a defective inverter circuit may require professional service from a reputable laptop shop of better, support from ACER itself

Aspire 5520 has LCD Display. The screen displays becomes dark/ dim if there is no backlight.
There are two parts responsible for lighting the display. First is the CCFL (Cold Cathode Florecent Lamp), which is the back light and the second is the Inverter board, which provides high voltage to the CCFL. These parts are inside the LCD screen. Either of the parts may be faulty or in some rare cases both. Also, the video data cable may be loose or faulty, which can be identified only after opening the top cover.
So, my advice is that you get it properly checked by any professional for replacement of Inverter or CCFL.

if you go to www.ebay.com and go to catagories and search laptops find the search bar and look for acer aspire 5520 screens you should find several places selling them

depending on what sort you go for i think they range from about £60 - £75 ish for a shinny glossy one

Hi, Every PC-Laptop has BIOS otherwise nothing would work at all. Try turning the PC on & hold down ALT & F4 together that should get you into the BIOS. As far as having no display then your Video card must be not working & needs replacing. Please leave me feed back: Malcolm Campbell, Thanks.

it looks like it is a motherboard problem. check if your system will boot to safe mode by tapping F8 as soon as you turn on the computer.

To verify it isn't a battery issue you can try taking the battery out completely and plugging in the A/C adapter and turning it on.

Without more information it's hard it's hard to diagnose your issue more specificially. Do you get any lights on the front?

My Acer Aspire 3000 is really dark and dim

If the brightness is dull even when connected to the mains, it maybe that your back lighting is faulty on the screen and you will need a qualified repairer, although it may be worth looking at a new notebook depending on the cost.
