Moisture builds in the upper and lower zones and eventually turns to ice. The gaskets look good and I used a hair drier on them just in case. What is causing this? How is the moisture getting into the sealed chambers?

Is it cooling ok?Where did you find the oil? If is not cooling and you see an oil spot inside or outside where the compresor is that means there's a refrigerant leak.

It will either be the thermal resistor or the controller of which the electronic thermostat is a part and yes it can be repaired. It is a reasonably common and cheap fault to repair. If you go to the following link you can get the service manual FOC
