You havent said what make and model this relates to.

But generally, you adjust the top thread and leave the bottom thread tension alone (unless it has been altered in error).

If your machine has a removeable bobbin case that goes into a front loading vertical rotary hook then you adjust a little screw on the bobbin case with a mini screwdriver. See this website for lots of great sewing machine tips and general help. http://sewing.about.com/od/sewingmachineparts/p/bobbincase.htm This page shows a removable bobbin case and explains which way the bobbin goes into it. If the bobbin is in the wrong way or not under tension this could be causing your stitching issues too.

Only 1/4 turn increments each time. To check tension on the bobbin case, put in the bobbin, pull the thread into tension spring, then hold the thread tail and dangle the bobbin case and bobbin (dangle test). It should hang in the air and the bobbin not release any thread. So turn screw up until you get it to this point but no further. With a gentle pull though, you want the thread to come out of it. Right to tighten, left to loosen usually.

If you search some of my other solutions I've covered the dangle test lots of times.

Pfaff expression thread broke half way through button hole. How do I complete the buttonhole?

1. Change thread/needle.
2. If the bottom stitch is loose then tighten the top tension. If the bottom appears to be too tight then loosen the top tension.
3. It may help to put the feed dogs down also.

I have a brother PR1000 and on the test stitch there is too much bobbin thread showing underneath. do I adjust the tension in the top thread or the bobbin tension?

Yes Adjust to more tight see what it'll do.
Bottom bobby is too tight or upper thread control is too lose.

Good luck

My top thread is picking and the bottom thread is fine i have tried rethreading and re did the bobbin even changed threads and tried the tension

If the top thread is too loose and the bottom is tight you can loosen the top tension and this should take care of the problem. You may need to adjust the bobbin by tightening if it is still not as pretty as you would like it. Look at my attachment on how to set tension.

Bobbin tension too loose

You don't give us the make and model of your machine.... so it's hard to give you decent specific advice. Secondly your question isn't making sense. If you are getting loops on the bottom your top tension isn't right(too loose) if your loops are on top your top tension isn't right.(too tight) The only time you would mess with bobbin tension is when you change thread weights significantly. Like from 40 weight to 92 weight or visa versa.

Look at your bobbin case, bobbin carrier, shuttle/carrier..... there is a spring (it's a flat piece of metal) on the spring is a small screw. Use a small screw driver and tighten the spring 1/4 turn. Loosen your top tension a couple turns. (remember right to tight, left to loose)

The bottom stitch is very loose. I've tried tightening and loosening the screw and the problem remains...HELP!

The bottom stitch is affected by the TOP thread tension :) First go back and make sure your bobbin tension is correct since you adjusted it. It should drop slightly when held suspended by danging it by the thread. If it reels out to the floor it is too loose. If it doesn't drop at all it is too tight.

Now that you have that adjusted look at your top tension. If it is loopy on the bottom side of the stitch the TOP tension is too loose. Increase the top tension.

Now take some scrap material and set machine to a wide zig zag, medium length stitch and sew a bit. Compare the top and the bottom sides of the stitch. They should look identical. Remember the TOP side effects the bottom and the BOTTOM tension effects the top side. Adjust accordingly until they look identical with no loose threads or loops and no puckering (puckering means it's too tight).

How do I adjust tension top thread too tight bottom

The bottom tension is too loose. If your bobbin is in a case there is a little screw on the side that will tighten the plates and increase the tension. Test your thread coming out of the case as you slowly make adjustments to the screw. A slight bit of resistance is what you want. If your sewing still puckers you may have to loosen the tension on the top. Sew on a scrap and go toward the smaller numbers to loosen the top tension until the stitches meet between the two layers of fabric.

Thread tension for regular seam sewing

oil the shaft for the presser bar and keep moving it up and down(it may take a while) until it moves freely. Always use Sewing machine oil Not 3N1 oil.
Tension:
If the thread is loose on the bottom of the fabric, it's actually the top thread is too loose. Think of 2 little elves playing tug of war in your machine, one on top and one underneath. If you have loops on bottom, the top needs to pull harder (tighten top tension). If you have loose thread on top your top tension is probably too tight and your bobbin thread too loose

Also look at:
Thread test
Test your thread quality to start, thread your machine and LIFT the presser foot (this opens the tension disks). Pull your top thread straight back. If you feel no tension no mater how much thread you pull, your thread is good. If that your machine passes that test, then let me know, we can go to step 2. If not, try different spool of thread, same test until you get a smooth pull (tip: always check your thread this way when you thread your machine)
Step 2:
Pull on your threaded bobbin thread while it’s in the machine. Does it pull smooth and even? If so, go to step 3. If not, try a new bobbin (bobbins get bent or distorted if wound too tight).
Clean thoroughly in the hook and bobbin case area and oil 1-2 drop is all.

BOTTOM STITCH IS ALWAYS LOOSE

If the top stitch is loose, then you need to tighten the bobbin tension: if the bottom stitch is loose, tighten the top tension. Hope this helps. It could also be the size needle and thread you are using for a particular fabric. Different fabrics require different notions.
