My condo has a Hotpoint dryer. It is about 3 years old and last fall it no longer dried. I took the dryer hose off from the wall and the dryer works fine, heats the condo. The dryer vent goes into the wall, then up after only about 8 inches, then goes up to what I believe is between the floor joists and out the wall. The outside has a venting louver but there is no movement of air with the dryer on. Is there a clog in the venting or is maybe the blower motor or belt has become weakened not to be able to push the air outside?

Hi.

With most Hotpoint/GE dryers the blower motor is not spin by a belt. The problem is unlikely the blower motor. The problem is lint in the air ducts and in the blower housing. The lint results in overheating and the high limit switch cuts off the power to the heater (burner or element depending on the model).
As a result the dryer does not heat up.

Access the heating group and remove lint from the air ducts. Also clean the lint filter.

Hotpoint appliances are built by GE. Below service manuals for different GE-manufactured dryers:

3 month old dryer is not drying, takes two drying cycles to get clothes dry.

since the dryer is so new and did work fine, i would guess the dryer is fine, but that the venting may be the issue. i would check the venting completely, the duct tubing from the dryer and any duct work that it goes into for an obstruction or clog.

Check the exhaust vent behind the dryer to make sure it's not kinked.
Take off the dryer vent and run the unit to see if it will dry normally. If it does, you still have a blockage in your exhaust vent in the wall.

My dryer is spinning but the clothes are not getting dry...I am hoping it is something that my husband can fix...the dryer is only 4 years old!

If there is any heat at all and just taking too long to dry the problem will be with the exhaust and will need to be clearde. Not the dryer itself but where the exhaust connects to the wall behind dryer to the outside. Not common for this to become restricted causing much longer dry times.

You have a venting problem. Some makes of condo size dryers have a lint screen inside the drum at the back. Check and clean. If not then there might be a screen in the wall or the ceiling of the room the dryer is in. Trace the vent from the dryer to the wall or ceiling. There should be a vent fan in the ceiling. Try asking the condo property management if there is an exhaust fan in the wall that needs cleaning.

It may not be your heating element. Your dryer lint vent pipe out the back of the machine or maybe out the side may be plugged. You have to pull the machine out and clear that pipe or rebuild it out to a soffit vent or static vent if it is in the attic, or out through your crawl space. This will make a huge difference. If that hot air and moisture doesn't get out of the machine it just goes back into your clothes.
Good luck!!
