I have the same problem. LCD shows indications like battery life, wide mode, aperture, etc, but does not record a picture in either video or still mode.

Having difficulty connecting the jvc gr-d370 to my computer using Windows Media. What must I do to retrieve the video from the camcorder using the USB cable?

I had this same issue. I solved it. The USB cable will NOT work to transfer video. You need a IEEE-1395 fire wire cable. I purchased the internal card and cable for under $20.00 for my DELL computer direct from dell. After you connect your camcorder to your computer, I clicked on windows photo gallery. Then in top left corner, click file and "import from camera or scanner. Your camcorder must be on video mode and play mode. Your computer should recognize the camcorder, click on it and then it will give you options, like you can upload and record direct onto DVD. I liked the option of uploading manually because if there are blank sections on the DV tape, the computer will stop uloading. Hope this helps.

Sounds as though the imager may have failed but make sure you are in video postion instead of memory mode. Little switch behind the lcd screen. Larry's Electronics

if the fault does not repair after tapping camera after switching on , its best to show to an expert repairer . This is a critical fault with the aperture of the camera getting stuck in closed position . Zoom lens has to be opened .. Maxx

GZ-MC500

I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER!
this is a strange method so bare with me (found the solution on another site)
turn on the camera and then hold it upside down then for want of a better word "tap" the camera near the lens (i tapped the mic in front of the flash) and hey presto your image will return!
dont ask me what this does as i have no clue, it might have the same error after you switch off the cam but just follow the same method and it will show images. or if your not happy giving your camera a slap then speak to JVC or any camera repair centre.
heres then link where i found this solution

Nope. The common cause of this is either dirty heads or an alignment. Try a head cleaner first or just run a blank tape from start to finish is scan mode (play then FF as a scan). That should resolve the problem. If not, then we'll go to the next step.
