My AEG Arctis freezer every few months randomly switches off and defrosts, the alarm doesn't sound until I press the button to turn it back on. Can you help?

Hi Julie. I'm Roger. It sounds like the operating thermostat is not working When not in the fast freeze mode. Can you here a click sound from the thermostat when turning the temperature up and down short of fast freeze? We normally charge them to operate at -10 to -20 degrees. The inside temperature will normally only reach a temperature around 18 degrees warmer. The operating thermostat should allow you to regulate its temperature any where from that capability up to where you want it. See if your thermostat makes a clicking sound when adjusted. The warning light comes on because it knows the box temperature is higher than it is set for and is warning you of that. If it uses a printed circuit (PC) board, the click will dot be very loud. listen closely. Let us know how this turns out for you. We have very good refrigeration techs. here. Someone else here may have an idea too.

Most often the old freezer has three indicator lights.
- Green light : that it is brought to a power source and turned on - Red light : means that the temperature is above -18 degrees - orange light : pressing the so-called S-switch which means that the compressor is running continuously. The S-button switch on a few hours before you begin deep-freeze foods. Freezing time depending on foods quantity (kg). With old freezer must be careful to turn off the switch S (orange light) when the red light goes out or when foods are frozen, otherwise after a few days may burn out the compressor. You should be following the instructions from user manual.
In new freezer managed by the electronics, this function has a predetermined maximum duration, in order to protect the compressor, and can have different marketing names like "shopping".....

It sounds like the door switch is sticking in the on position to me>
Does it go out if you manually press door switch with the door open?
If it doesnt then its almost certainly a sticking door switch. You may have to bring this unit completely out of the fridge to look at it and then test it for a permnanently closed contact.

You could have a freon leak and needs to be looked at .

Unit may be in a defrost mode

The freezer is probably in need of defrosting. This usually occurs when the freezer has been over packed. It needs to be able to ahve air flow through it, there are holes in the back of the freezer and a defrosting element at the top and they need to be clear in order to keep it frost free. It happend to me and we called an engineer out. solved it by using hair dryer to defrost it.

Also get yourself a stand alone fridge and freezer thermometer - leave it in for an hour -that will establish what the temperature really is which will help in diagnosing the cause.

Also trying unplugging it for 15 minutes so the display board loses power - then plug it back in - sometimes that will reset it.

the alarm is there to warn you that the freezers not up to set tempature.. The reason as I see what you wrote would be a stuck or burnt out auto defrost timer motor. or the units got a leak in the refrigerant line??? good luck
