Installation my question is if the kenwood kvt-717dvd needs a brain to be installed with it

i have a 717 no brain for sale ought at garage sale and was told all i neded were the wires. i had no clue it needs a brain .

The answer is simple "no" as the KVT-617DVD player and most other units are only made per batch now so they is no parts like the one you require as it was one main unit per unit and no overstocks but the simple parts were generic but the part you need was only ever to be used with the unit you have now.

It will be more cost effective to buy a replacment ..start over ..

What happened? It didn't come with one? LOL Your BEST bet is to check on ebay, or call Kenwood and buy one. Be prepared for sticker shock. I've seen faceplates go for over $100 from the manufacturer.
