I downloaded some new songs to my e260. Some of them are ok, but some of them have no sound. Everything on the screen looks as though the music should be playing, but it is not. I updated my firmware, but that did not help. Any other suggestions?

Hi, the Sansa E260 is a portable MP3 player released by SanDisk in 2004. Several problems may cause the E260 to not function as intended from time to time. Common problems that occur are the device freezing, album art not appearing on the screen when a song is playing, pictures not filling the screen size and missing information on the separate tracks. You can troubleshoot the device and fix many of these common problems without the need of a service technician.
Reset 1. The Sansa E260 may freeze or function in other unexpected ways from time to time. This generally occurs when the unit's software has developed an error. Reset the device to clear the error and return the device to normal working operation. A unit reset is similar to rebooting your computer. You won't lose any data stored on your device.
To reset the E260, press and hold the "Power/Menu" button for about 15 seconds. The device will be forced to power down, during which the error will be cleared. You can restart the E260 as normal once the reset is complete. Album Art Does Not Display 2. The E260 supports viewing album art on the display screen during the playing of a song. You may find that your album art is not showing up on the display when music is playing on the device. To fix this, make sure the associated album art file is in the same folder as the song being played. You will need to connect the E260 into your computer to move the album art files into the music folder. Photos Aren't Full-Screen 3. Photos displayed on the E260 will not show up as full-screen shots if they are not cropped to the correct dimensions. The E260 software does not support stretching pictures to fit the full screen. To ensure your photographs will display on the full screen, crop the images to 128x64 in photo-editing software prior to transferring the image on the E260. Unknown Artist or Album 4. The E260 displays information about each song using the ID3 tags associated with each track. ID3 tags hold information such as the artist name, album name, track number, year it was released and other information. If the E260 shows an artist or album as unknown, the information in the ID3 tag was not filled in. You can insert information into the ID3 tags from your computer.
To change the ID3 information, right-click on the music file and choose "Properties." Click on the "Summary" tab and choose "Advanced." The ID3 fields will display in the window. Insert any of the missing information and click "OK." When you upload the song onto your E260, the newly inserted information will show up in the display.
Try pressing f5 for refresh in Windows Media Player first (with your Sansa player connect)
Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website.
Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/DriverDownloads.aspx

Playlists can be made on the fly, but you have to play each song you
want to add to the playlist in order to bring up the option.
Basically WinAmp is the way to go [here's how:]
First, start up Winamp and add your songs to its library. You've probably already done this.
Next, create a playlist. Call it "Exercise" for this example. Drag a few songs from your library to it.
Next, connect your e260 in MTP mode. It should show up after a few
seconds under the "Portables" item in the Winamp hierarchy. Right-click
the Exercise playlist and send to your e260. Wait for the playlist and
songs to sync, then disconnect your device.
(Optional) go to your e260's playlists and confirm that Exercise
didn't show up. If you do see it, then you probably have a future
version of the firmware that doesn't have this problem.
Here's the kick. Turn the e260 off by holding down the power button
for a couple seconds until you see "GOODBYE." Release the power button.
Switch the lock slider to the locked position. Press the power button
and keep holding it down. The blue wheel light will come on, and then
you'll see the SanDisk logo. Then the screen will go black and you'll
see
Key LOCKED System shutdown
Once you see that message, you can let go of the power button. Flip
the lock slider to the unlocked position and press the power button
again. Now navigate back to your playlists and you should see Exercise!
Fortunately you don't have to go through these hoops with every
sync. You can freely edit existing playlists and add/remove music;
these actions appear to work fine. This hack is necessary only to get
new playlists to show up.
Plug into your computer, click on the driver letter it represents, and empty all folders it displays. Don't delete the folders just delete the contents in each one.
Hi.
It would seem that either the internal memory of your player has been corrupted or the firmware has experienced some errors. The best way to fix your player would be to either format it or re-load its firmware. Either way, you may need to re-load your music files once again.
First, you would need to set your player to MSC mode by navigating the menu as follows:
Menu >> Settings >> USB Mode, then select "MSC".
If you have the "Rhapsody" E200 version, then select "Rhapsody" (it's the same as "MSC" mode)
Next, plug your player in your computer and look for the drive letter corresponding to your Sansa. Right-click on the drive letter, then select "Format". Just make sure that the File System is set to FAT32. Click "Start" to begin the Format and follow the on-screen prompts.
Since your songs came from audio CD, simply Drag-and-drop the files to your player (MSC mode is will actually work best with audio CD songs)
If this does not work, then go ahead and re-load your Firmmware using this instruction I received from SanDisk technical support:
Switch your Sansa E260 to its Recovery Mode:
1. Make sure the player is powered off
2. Enable the "Hold" switch (located on the top of the player). You would know it's enabled when you see the "orange-colored" surface
3. Press the "Record" button. Make sure you keep it pressed while pressing on the "Menu" button.
4. keep your fingers pressed on these 2 buttons until the E260 LCD screen displays "Welcome to Recovery Mode"
5. Connect your E260 to your computer. (Just a reminder: The minimum Operating System requirements for a Sansa E200 player is Windows XP and above)
6. Double-click on "My Computer" and you would see your Sansa E260 appear as a "16 MB" drive. Note: If you do not see that "16 MB" drive/partition, please repeat steps 1-6.
Next, Apply the firmware for the E260 (your player should be connected to your PC at this time):
Step 1:
Use this link to download the firmware for your Sansa E260 (for better results, please save this file on your "Desktop":
http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/Downloads/firmware/e200fw01.00.12.exe
Step 2:
Double left-click on the downloaded file, and follow the on-screen prompts. The file will automatically re-flash your player and format it as well, thereby clearing all possible file/system corruptions that may have occurred.
Step 3:
When the process is complete, unplug your E260 from your computer, and please make sure you disable the "Hold" switch
Step 4:
Power up your E260 and 90-99% of the time, it would restore your player to normal settings.
