Pull the hard drive, remove the battery AND the BIOS battery. Let it sit for 300 seconds. Then replace the BIOS battery and the main battery, but NOT the hard drive, then go into BIOS SETUP, and choose the default settings. Then boot to a bootable CD (such as Hiren's BootCD 15.2, or Parted Magic). Then set the boot options to NOT BOOT to the hard drive. Then reinstall the hard drive, and boot to your Windows installation CD, and reinstall the OS of your choice.

If the Hard Drive self test utility is unable to detect the Hard Drive, the Hard Drive in your Notebook might have gone bad.
I recommend you to try removing and reseating the Hard Drive by getting the instructions from the Manual of the Notebook which can be accessed from the link below so that if there is any issue with the Connectivity, this should solve the issue:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00636251.pdf
You can find the necessary instructions to remove and replace the Hard Drive in the Notebook from page numbers 120 of 258 in the manual.
Hope this helps...

You can not dual boot with oem software from HP. I run dual boot linux and XP. I tried everything to get vista to work in the dual boot. Here are your options.
Get a full copy of windows vista and XP with keys. Windows vista can not be the HP Cd for reinsatlation of windows. It has to be a stand alone copy of Vista. Back up data. Format drive, install xp, install vista.
Option 2 see it there is to uyse a virtualization software I use Kubuntu (Linux) with virtualbox and I used the HP disk to instll in the virtual machine. It is not a perfect system but it allows me to work on vista, and xp while never having to dualboot. think of it as windows in windows. or I like windows in Linux.

Is the download page for virtual box.. let me know if you need more help.

It should have an error code in there somewhere on the screen where it says it's shutting down.
Type that error code into Google and you'll find an array of answers. There's a bunch of things that can cause the problem you listed, but we don't know which one.
