The heating element has a thick layer of white over it
(this crust comes off when pounding on it) and the dishwasher itself has gritty film all over....dishes come out with white splotches all over... dishwasher is only 4 yrs old...
i have a whirlpool gold
Another way to descale your dishwasher is to use vinegar. This is also very inexpensive. Put a cup of vinegar into the dishwasher and run it, allowing it to go through all cycles. I would turn the heated dry off.
Please rate this solution
Another not necessarily cheaper, but definitely more effective way to descale just about any cleaning system is to run CLR through it. used it on carpet cleaning systems as a replacement for industrial descaler. works just as good and is much more accessible
This means that your water is extremely hard
You need to descale your machine with a good descaling solution. this you can get in a good hardware store
Tried something called LemiShine and it helped. Then tried Electrosol advanced dishwasher detergent (powder) and worked great! My glasses where all cloudy and had white residue, not with the Electrosol Advanced. I've heard Cascade complete also works well.
If you have this problem AND have an under ground sprinkler system or just had plumbing work done at your home in the last 2 months before this occured??? I can fix your problem in 10 seconds...Regards Rev. My glasses are crystal clear again...YEA!!!!!!! Food is not sticking and washing clean again YEA!!!!! [email protected]
I also had this problem but was sure it must be something since it happened virtually overnight. One day it was fine, the next this awful white gritty film over everything. However I checked this site, saw the recommendation about Dishwasher Magic and figured that had to be cheaper than a new dishwasher!
I am delighted to say that it worked! Thank you for saving me the expense and hassle of buying something that was not needed!
The problem is hard water. this is a new product out called the dishwasher filtration system and it actually filters the water going into the dishwasher. i tried everything to get my dishes clean but nothing worked until i tried this system. my glasses all had a white, cloudy look to them and it was terrible. you can get it at www.dishwasherfilter.com. it is very affordable and works amazing. the filter fits right under the sink and solves the problem immediately. if you use the discount code DFMTEN you will get 10% off
I don't believe it is the hard water, our older Whirlpool that we had for 7 years never left this white film on the glasses and plastic spoons. We have a brand new Gold Whirlpool and it is just awful on the white file. It is quiter and has more room than the last one, so I hope we can resolve it. We used Jet Dry tonight and that was not any better.

You have hard water. The film is the soap reacting with minerals in the water to form scum. Switch to a dishwasher detergent meant for hard water. Or, you can use a descaler like citric acid or vinegar in the rinse cycle.
Add a half a gallon of vinegar and some citric acid. That will clean it right up! Use vinegar in your rinse cycle.

Washer worked great fdor a few weeks and now every load has a white tacky dry film all over every load....I've cleaned the interior thoroughly and no change....anything plastic I put in the washer seems to get the most film on it and everything requires a handwashing afterwards...the machine has had less than 20 loads put through it.
I use a liquid soap/rinse agent, and have a hard white crusty build up. It's NOT hard water, as it does not happen to anything else. In the five yrs we've been here I've never had to clean my shower heads of scrub build up in toilet tanks. It's the soap. Every so often I have to tear down the entire top of the D/W pump/spray arm assys/and dispencer. Seems rediculous that w/ todays tech/advances in chem they can't come up w/ a safe phosfate alternative. But I guess if your Co has vested intrests in D/W mftrg/ parts/ the soap, creating prob's makes more $.
